The little luxuries that make you feel pampered every time you use them

If somebody handed you twenty-five bucks and said "go buy yourself something nice," how would you spend it?

This morning in the shower I used a body wash that smells like heaven. Or, more precisely, like violet leaf, pepper, and sandalwood. One reviewer said the scent evokes “the bark of a redwood tree and of the sound of streams of clear water trickling nearby.” What a way to start your morning, right?

This body wash (which I purchased several times before it was phased out, sniff) was initially a gift from a friend who loved her own purchase so much she just had to share—and so she bought one for me. This friend introduces me to all kinds of great stuff I would never find without her, because she has a practiced eye for finding what she calls “little luxuries.” She finds deep satisfaction in uncovering small indulgences that are undoubtedly a splurge but don’t break the bank, and make you feel pampered every time you use them.

Finding these special things is almost like a game for my friend. She revels in finding those quotidian items that are particularly good, and if they’re not particularly well known, so much the better—the discovery process accounts for much of the enjoyment. She loves nothing more than to scoop up an accessible extravagance that delivers an outsize amount of joy for the expense. Was that special body wash much more expensive than the stuff you can (and I often do) buy by the quart at Target? Yes. But does it, for ten minutes, make me feel like I’m living my best spa life? Absolutely.

When we’re talking about little luxuries, we’re not talking about the kinds of purchases that Consumer Reports or Wirecutter advise you purchase as a “best value.” No, we’re dealing in far more idiosyncratic territory, because for something to feel luxurious it has to feel appreciated—by you. The value comes from the joy it brings you, whatever it is. Period.

For my friend, a little luxury might look like a new hair mask that makes not just a discernible but an incredible difference in her hair, or an inexpensive eye mask that delivers great bang for the buck, or the absolute best dried fruit for her charcuterie board, or tiny tea lights exactly right for the season, or a lip gloss in the exact shade she’s always wanted, from a brand with not only a great product but beautiful packaging. She’s willing to pay an extra few bucks for the packaging, because this item is more than serviceable to her: it’s a luxury.

My luxuries are different: I love lip gloss and hair masks and fancy dried lemons, but you know what else I really love? Costco delivery. On a busy day that feels like the height of luxury.

Sometimes, in that Don’t Overthink It-style spirit of experimentation, I’ve tried some things I expected to feel luxurious, only to discover I just really don’t care that much. Last year I ordered a box of BEST OF YOUR LIFE assorted California citrus, because I adore citrus fruit. I discovered that this supposed best of class grapefruit—even though I REALLY love grapefruit—just doesn’t do it for me. But for some people this same box of citrus would make their entire winter.

Your little luxuries—whether you’re enjoying them in the present tense or dreaming about future possibilities—will be uniquely yours. That’s why this topic makes for such interesting conversation!

When you wish to selectively choose a strategic splurge—or if somebody handed you twenty-five bucks and said “go buy yourself something nice,” how would you spend it?

P.S. We’ve talked before about the closely related idea of simple abundance. That post and its comments section—along with the ongoing comments I receive from you, all these years later—are one of my very favorite things in Modern Mrs Darcy history! Read that post here: you’ll be glad you did.

Naturally, if someone gave me $25, I’d head straight to the bookstore! My boss gave me a $25 gift card for Christmas last year and it is earmarked for a book!

  2. Thymes Frasier Fir candle is my go to small luxury. I originally purchased it during the Christmas season to have a tree smell but now burn it all year long. It’s such a refreshing, clean forest smell! It’s my favorite and something I gift as well!

The Laundress liquid detergent in the Classic scent. Heaven, even if I can only afford to use it on underthings. Also a once a month pedicure. I’m diabetic, and footcare is important!

    • Catherine says:

Hi Mary! The Laundress has advised that everyone stop using all of their products immediately as a dangerous bacteria has been identified and has affected many of their products I’m sorry to say. Go to their web site for the latest and instructions on how to request a refund from Jan 2021 to Nov 2022. I was so disappointed as I’ve loved many of their products.

If someone handed me $25 to spend on a small luxury, I would spend it on a box of one of my favorite teas that never seems to go on sale.

  6. Jenny says:

My grandpa’s nieces used to send us a box of Texas grapefruit every Christmas. I can’t remember what company they were from, but they were AMAZING! I should look into getting some of those.

Claus Porto soaps (I love Banho). Not only do they smell great and last forever, they remind me of the vacation in which I discovered them!

Stash Decaf Pumpkin Spice Black Tea – makes an incredible tea latte. With a little honey, it fits the “little luxuries”. Particularly if you have a milk frother (an automatic pitcher milk frother is one of my favorites things but it cost closer to $50).

  9. Aubrey Freely says:

Londontown makes this incredible, non-greasy “whipped cloud” hand lotion and having some of it in my car makes long waits at stop lights much less annoying.

  10. Allison Wolfe says:

Diva Wash by Tyler Candle Company. There is nothing more luxurious than slipping into sheets washed in this fabulous smelling wash!! Tyler does Diva in candles, melts, lotion and sachets, but nothing beats washing your sheets and fine washables in it. Glorious!

I know cleaning products might not be “luxurious” but – Mrs Meyers products in the “Snowdrop” scent are HEAVENLY. I stock up during the winter season when the scent is in stock. The candles are divine, too.

    • Adrienne says:

I love the Mrs. Meyers peppermint scent! I stock the hand soap in our bathrooms in December but use the all-purpose cleaner year-round.

  12. Ellen says:

Quality knitting yarn- probably for uncomplicated projects for our 3 granddaughters (9 months old, 2nd due date Dec 7, and 3rd on April 5)

  13. Margee Krebs says:

One of my favorite little luxuries is Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse. It’s a “dry oil” that I use on my face, especially in winter. It moisturizes without feeling greasy, and smells wonderful! I feel like a fancy Frenchwoman whenever I use it! 😁

  14. Kate says:

Maldon smoked salt flakes as a finishing salt when I cook. Expensive for salt but still only a few dollars per box and lasts me over a year!

  15. Suzanne Stewart says:

For $25, I’d buy myself hours of happiness. For that amount, I could get a tin of Republic of Tea’s Cranberry Blood Orange tea and collage ephemera (stickers, papers, etc.) Then, I’d spend afternoons in my art studio making multimedia art pieces while sipping my favorite brew.

  16. Suzy says:

Ooh, let’s see….book…or chocolate? Actually I would go to pangobooks.com and buy FOUR used books that I want to own. OR no, maybe I would buy an expensive magazine that I normally wouldn’t splurge on (Royalty or Home Decor) and then a big bunch of beautiful flowers! And a tiny chocolate.

  17. Hilary says:

What is the body wash you reference at the beginning? I’m dying to know! 🙂

At $25 ,I’d love to buy some quirky earrings from a small business & a latte from my favorite coffee shop.

  18. Heather says:

Wavertree & London soap (Beach is my favorite), a new book (currently counting the days until the release of the sequel to Ninth House), or maybe a new houseplant.

  19. Jo Yates says:

I loved Pier1’s reed diffuser scent First Rain, but it’s been discontinued.😣 I put it in my sewing room and it would draw me in to stay & make something.

  20. Well, now that I’m 50 I don’t think twice about little indulgences. I buy better chocolate (Hu or Endangered Species), I use L’Occitane Almond Oil for my shower gel because it is so amazing, especially in the winter, and I use the Rodan & Fields body cream. It is PRICEY, but I only need a little bit to keep my legs from drying out over the winter. So, one container lasts me forever! It’s the little things that help us enjoy the days. I also have no qualms about using my Nespresso frother every day!

    • Cheryl says:

For $25 I can get five trips to Baskin Robbins for a double Jamoca Almond Fudge/Chocolate cone! I’m a little girl again, at 70.

      • Carol Gallman says:

I know where all the B&R stores are near me so that I can occasionally drop by for a Jamoca Almond Fudge ice cream–the best!

  21. Julie says:

For me it was a luxury to pay Shutterfly to address my Christmas cards for me instead of doing it myself this year. It took some time to upload all of the addresses but seeing them all addressed and ready to go really made me happy.

  22. Vicki says:

I love inexpensive ($30ish) fountain pens with good quality inks! Such a treat to write with. Also, Noonday Collection has these amazing soy candles that smell amazing and come in beautiful brass containers with lids. I bought them as gifts last year and everyone raved! So I bought one for myself, too and it smells amazing.

  23. Janna says:

Isle of Paradise self tanner drops from Amazon. The BEST self tanner I’ve ever used. Absolutely NO streaking, just gives you a healthy glow, no odor, the more you use, the darker your “tan.” You mix the drops with your own moisturizer/lotion.

  24. Molly says:

I am loving these comments! I like to buy “Beard Dye for Men” and use it to tint my eyebrows every couple of weeks. I’m very fair and I love waking up with eyebrows!

  25. Kim Ries says:

My favorite luxury item is Royal Riveria pears from Harry & David. Pricey but so good!

My favorite scent is Library of Flowers Willow and Water. The packaging is beautiful and the scent is light and fresh. Not too pricey.

  26. bonni says:

Laura Mercier creme brulee souffle body creme. Bought for myself from my husband for Xmas last year. I’ve made it last! It’s so good, I could almost eat it.

  27. Julia Horan says:

My Luxury is the Lindt Sea Salt Dark Chocolate bar I get every Monday. I make it last having two squares every afternoon throughout the week. Another luxury to go along with the holiday season is the Christmas Red Nail Polish I plan to select this weekend for an at home pedicure. Another recent luxury was my Esty purchase I got a super cute magnet cup of tea bookmark.

  28. Gina says:

I started needing reading glasses after I turned 40, and I used to purchase cheap ones from Walmart or Target. I was intrigued to see Peepers reading glasses on Oprah’s Favorite Thing list and I bought a pair. What a difference! I would argue that good reading glasses are a necessity, and although these are a bit more expensive at $29.00 a pair, they are well worth it.

  29. Karen Q Jeske says:

Thanks everyone! I picked up lots of nice suggestions. Personally, I always feel luxurious if I’m carrying a Chanel lipstick with me.

  30. Hillary says:

They cost more than $25, but Diptyque small votive candles are decadent! They smell BEYOND yummy and bring me so much joy. Truly a little luxury.

  31. Karen says:

I really want a new curling iron so I’d probably put that toward the purchase of one. I might also go on Thrift Books and see if any back list titles I want are there

  32. Brooke says:

I splurge on Florida citrus every winter…in particular, I order 2-3 flats of Honeybells. DELICIOUS.
And I also think that the Tatcha Kissu lip mask is particularly indulgent, and something I use every day.

  33. Gemma says:

My little luxury is Barnie’s coffee, I love it and it truly does feel indulgent. I haven’t tried a flavour I haven’t loved and even the smell of the coffee grounds as I scoop it out to start brewing makes me ecstatically happy. I know it might be an odd one, but I really love cookbooks too, they really do feel like a treat to me. There’s something about seeing something that I can create, learning about different flavour combinations and cooking methods, I just love them. And if there’s also a story behind it – I’m in heaven!

  34. Ruth O says:

Because of the comment about Kiehl’s hand salve, I tried it, and I love it! Just happened to get a Sephora coupon in my email and it came in handy. It has healed the rough fingers of winter, and I only really apply it heavily at night.
A book and some coffee would be my luxury spend, otherwise!

  35. Katherine says:

I order Dr. Sam Bunting’s Flawless Moisturizer that is shipped from England. I used to feel ridiculous ordering it, but my crazy sensitive combo skin loves it, so I allow myself this little luxury.

My other little luxury is paying $5 a month to Tablo for a TV guide and to see programs listed by graphics instead of words. (I used a mohu leaf antenna for free over the air tv and Tablo records programs. It’s like Tivo, but for free TV. I use Roku for extra shows instead of cable.)

  36. Alysa says:

I love these ideas so much! Here are some of my favourite little luxuries:
Blume Salted Caramel Latte drinks (healthy and indulgent!)
Land of Daughters “A light remains” candle to honour those people I’ve lost. I make a ritual of sitting down, lighting my candle and drinking my latte. Classic mint tea like Starbucks Mint majesty.
Dry brushing before a shower, and then a nice Moroccan body oil after. Rocky Mountain Bubble bath- you only need 1 tsp and it gives so many bubbles. My small bottle lasted me 2 years!!!
Burt’s Bees Lip Balm, fancy pens like Sarasa Vintage pens, Papermate Flairs, pentel Energel Pens, or BIC Gelocity pens. Nothing better than writing a to-do list with fancy pens!
