Get ready to set the mood for a cozy season

My favorite candle brands and scents for a treasured fall and winter ritual

I burn candles year round but there’s no denying that I really lean into the practice once fall hits—or, these days, when I’m wishing for fall to arrive. (Although the past few mornings have been cool and far less humid than has been typical here; we might even have used the word “crisp” in my house to describe those pre-8am hours? Don’t be too jealous, the forecast says it won’t last.)

I know I’m in good company when I say that for me, fall means baking, and putting the throw blankets back on the couch, and burning all the candles. Whether you’re lighting up a new-to-you seasonal scent or an old standby, candles help set a cozy mood, no matter the season.

Sometimes I forget that candles aren’t just for fall! While burning a candle is a daily practice in the cooler months, I enjoy burning them more sparingly in the summertime. (Any morning feels more inviting when a candle is burning!)

Candles are also one of my favorite gifts to give or receive; I gift candles year-round. A candle that’s perfectly suited to the recipient’s interests (which around here usually means great literary candles), or is downright luxurious no matter their interests, makes a lovely gift any time of year. (There are candles on this list that I would never think to buy for myself, but that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed after having been the recipient of a thoughtful and delicious-smelling gift.)

I’ve been looking at my candle stash to see what I have to look forward to and what needs replenishing, and thought I’d share some of my favorites with you, in case you also wouldn’t mind some candle inspiration yourself.

Trapp Fragrances

Black Pepper was a forever favorite but Trapp unfortunately discontinued it several years ago. I still miss it desperately, but until they bring it back (a girl can dream) Tabac & Leather and Sexy Cinnamon are also pretty great.

Opalhouse

I like many of the scents but Opalhouse is probably best known for Island Moonlight because it’s been widely plugged as an Anthropologie Capri Blue dupe. You can find Opalhouse candles at Target, in store or online.

Boy Smells

This candle company was started by fashion veterans as an experiment—and quite a successful one at that. I first discovered this candle company when the unusual brand name caught my eye … and then I started smelling the scents and fell in love! I love most of their offerings but especially Cedar Stack.

Ranger Station

Candles made in reusable cocktail glasses? Genius. I found this brand when I was looking for elevated candles for my husband Will, who appreciates a nice-smelling candle. I especially love the Old Fashioned Candle, which I will confess to buying for Will based on the name alone, but which we both ended up loving.

Hearth & Hand with Magnolia

These candles are easy to love and easy to toss into my cart when I’m shopping at Target: the scents are great and the price is right! I like some more than others but have never bought a bad one, in any size, shape, or scent. Pampas is pictured here.

Jo Malone London

Jo Malone has some of the best scents out there! These luxury candles are sold at a luxury price point, so I tend to pick these up when I’m looking for a nice gift. (I’ve also been lucky to receive several as very nice gifts.) Their signature fragrance Lime Basil & Mandarin is one of my favorites, and I cannot wait for them restock Pine & Eucalyptus this holiday season.

Threshold

This Target brand features crackling wooden wick candles. If you’re a candle fan and haven’t tried wooden wicks, please do! You won’t be sorry. I especially appreciate Threshold’s earthy scent profiles, particularly that of Ocean Air and Moss.

Frostbeard

The candle company for book lovers, it’s impossible to go wrong. They have myriad options ranging from Old Books to Reading at the Café to Sherlock’s Study.

Anthropologie

My relationship with Anthro candles is devoted and long. While they offer a wide and top-notch selection of scented candles year-round, I can’t resist picking up their candles at a discount during periodic sales. For scent and aesthetics, I especially love the Boulangerie jar candles: they’re beautifully designed and smell amazing, especially Vanilla & Fig. Anthro also makes amazing scented tea lights that are seasonal; I keep an eye out for them every holiday season.

Paddywax

Of course I had to share this Jane Austen candle from Paddywax’s Library collection! These adorable little tin candles are also go-tos, for burning at home and for gifting. I know people who will toss one in their suitcase on a long trip just so they can bring a scent from home with them! Plus I just discovered they make national parks candles; Will may be getting one in his stocking or for his birthday.

Homesick

Homesick candles are beautiful and highly personalized; of all the candles we’ve talked about today I’ve found these scents are most likely to be … a little weird. But I LOVE the ones I love, and am particularly partial to Book Club, Gone Hiking, and Kentucky (of course). We give Homesick’s state candles A LOT as housewarming and moving away gifts.

Do you have any go-to candles? Please tell me us about them in comments!

P.S. Our home library and The little luxuries that make you feel pampered every time you use them.

Yankee Candle “Autumn Lodge” — reminds me of my dad’s cherry pipe tobacco. They only bring it around about every 5 years and 2023 is the year! I’ve already ordered a stash to live on till they make it again.

    • Deborah Hubbert says:

Oh my gosh, I could have written your post myself — I feel exactly the same about “Autumn Lodge” — it’s my dad’s pipe! I even wrote Yankee candles and asked them to bring it back! I found one new on Amazon last year and plan to make it last. Couldn’t hurt to write Yankee with your own request!

Meanwhile — again from Yankee, the best Autumn scents are Mackintosh and Spiced Pumpkin — nothing says Fall better!🍂🍁

  2. Colleen says:

My favorite candles are Chez Lapin, a local Pittsburgh company. They have French inspired scents, and burn evenly. My favorite scent is Brioche Bostock.

  3. Michelle says:

Better Things Candle Company makes my all time favorite candles!! And I always love supporting small business owners whenever possible. Cozy Cabin is my fave but I’ve never gotten a candle of theirs that’s disappointed! A fun Instagram follow too 👍🏼

  4. Nicole Siswick says:

My all time fave bookish candle is Anne’s Octobers from by From The Page on Etsy. I don’t see it available in her shop yet this year, but I always snap that one up, along with Afternoon Tea. Definitely check them out!

    • Katherine says:

Sydney Hale’s Bergamot and Black Tea is my current favorite. For the winter months I like Thymes’ Fraser Fir or Opalhouse’s Holiday Spruce, which has a similar scent.

LIMA candles (https://www.limaunitedbylove.com). I love their story and mission AND candles. They are a local business run by two women in my hometown. They do a lot of fundraisers for women owned charities in our area-which is awesome. But, the best thing is that their candles are quality. They have a long burn time, and they burn clean. They have amazing scents (my favorite is the Black Raspberry Vanilla) that are made from essential oils, and don’t cause my allergies to flare up. I’ve given away SO many of these candles, and will continue to burn them in my home for as long as they make them.

  6. Anne Bunfill says:

My favorite candles are from the Antique Candle Co! They come in a cute Mason jars and burn for hours. My favorite scent is Mama’s Kitchen and Pumpkin Spice!

    • Margo says:

I agree! I love the candles from Antique Candle Co. I’m currently burning Blueberry Cobbler which smells as good as it sounds! Sadly they discontinued my favorite fall candle – Apple Pickin. Tree Farm is a great Christmas scent.

  7. Lisa says:

My favorite fall candle is Leaves by Bath & Body Works. Even though we still typically run the A/C well into October, Leaves makes me feel like it’s fall.

  8. Kelly says:

Be careful when choosing candle scents- many of these fragrances are endocrine disrupters and can be toxic- read your labels!

  9. Rosalind E Hale says:

Many years ago, I was gifted A clove scented candle. Can you recommend one as I haven’t found any clove scented candles?

  10. Rachel says:

My son is now very into candles so we spent a lot of time last week just walking around sniffing stuff at our local Bath & Body Works. He really liked one called Flannel.
On a separate note, if you want to read more about candles, I highly recommend reading the very occasional (like once every 6-8 months) Candle Update that Tamara Keith (NPR) writes about the candles in the US Secret Service Guard House at the White House. It’s super fun.

  11. Kacie says:

I am allllll about that dewpoint for how I feel! Warm, cold, boiling!

I tend to be really cold, so I prefer a higher dewpoint. Otherwise, I’m adding a layer.

  12. Jane B says:

I’m so glad Paddywax is on here! Can confirm the Jane Austen scent is a delight! I also liked Mark Twain, but a brief look at their website looks like they’ve added to their library collection! Also their Bamboo Green Tea scent is really lovely for this time of year when you’re not quite ready for pumpkin spice.

  13. Janean says:

Sea Salt Grapefruit by Apotheke – this candle lives on my desk. I’m a sucker for anything grapefruit/citrus. Having lived on the ocean shore for half my life, anything sea salt is a huge draw.
Winter Keep by Frostbeard – scent is evergreen forest and bonfire – if you love the scent of a roaring fire, this is for you. My favorite winter or rainy, broody day candle.
The Jane Austen by Paddywax – a longtime fave. My reading candle.
Jardin de Paris by Rifle Paper Co is a bright and fresh scent. Also on my desk.

  14. Melanie says:

I fell in love with Castelbel candles and soaps while traveling in Portugal several years ago. Had I know how much I’d love the few souvenirs I brought home, I would have filled a suitcase! Occasionally I’ll see some of their soaps at Homegoods or World Market, but I haven’t been able to find their candles at any brick and mortar stores stateside. Of course my favorite scents are in their pricey Portus Cale collections (Blue & Gold and White Crane). I could order some online, but I’d rather go back to Portugal to stock up!

    • Melanie says:

Going back to Portugal sounds very bougie…I just wanted to say that’s not actually a realistic option for me, just a dream!

  15. Maureen O’Connell says:

My go-to candle is Niven Morgan’s Paris, a mix of juniper and absinthe that conjures a drizzly night in Montmartre, notes of slow jazz whining out a cafe door as a woman in a trench coat walks through the hazy streetlight, high heels clicking on the cobblestones. For fall, I love Nest’s Pumpkin Chai. For winter and Christmas time Nest’s holiday candle is lovely and if you’re really feeling like treating yourself, Tiziana Tereni’s Spicy Snow (or any scent really) or a Cire Trudon scent (the oldest candlemaker in France, going all the way back to the court of Louis XIV) smell like they were blended by angels.

  16. Tricia says:

I love scented candles in my home office but I don’t love the particulates in the air that come from burning. I recently purchased a candle warmer from Amazon that looks great on my desk and allows me to fully enjoy the scent. Highly recommend. There are many styles available. I got one with several heat levels and a timer.

  17. Katie says:

The ABC Market candles are my absolute FAVORITE! Most of her scents are literary-inspired. They burn beautifully and smell SO good! She’s a fantastic bookish small business that I love to support.

  18. Nikki says:

My husband bought me the most delicious cardamom + maple candle from Moonrise Candle Co, a local company. I am sad that they don’t seem to be carrying it anymore (could be seasonal) but that means I can try something new soon! 🙂

    • Jannet says:

Cardamom & Maple sounds like an awesome combo. I believe Yankee Candle has some Maple & Maple combos, though not Cardamom.

  19. Ellen says:

I discovered my favorite candle on a different book podcast “Harvest” from Hillhouse naturals. It just smells like fall but is subtle enough to burn most of the year. I also really like Candles from HGTV’s Hometown stars Erin and Ben. I haven’t tried them all but I’m dying to go to their candle store set up like an old library!! I like everything I’ve tried but my favorite is “Saturday morning” which is blackberry and grapefruit.

  20. Kay Welch says:

I love candles, too. My favorite brand is Calyan Wax Co. They have wonderful fragrances, and my favorite is Fig * Seagrass. There is a delicious holiday fragrance, too. The best thing about them is that a portion of the profits are dedicated to helping nonprofits that work in ending human trafficking. I love giving the holiday candles for gifts each year.

  21. Suzy says:

I thought I liked candles 23 years ago when I got married, and in fact, my wedding and my reception were candlelit. Many people gave us candles or candleholders for gifts. But it turned out it was more the LOOK of candles that I liked, not the scent! I actually find the scent of almost all burning candles to be cloying, perfumy and close. Hot perfumed air! But candlelight?? Perfection! Makes everybody and every room look wonderful!! And candelabra, candlesticks and pretty candleholders? So cool and so elegant! I worked once for a woman who gave dinners in her big elegant dining room, ENTIRELY lit by candles on the wall, candelabra on the table and a lit fireplace. Wow, was it enchanting. Right out of Jane Austen! So now I look for dripless tapered white candles with almost no scent.

  22. Nancy says:

Love candles too but always stress over did I blow them out so looking for a nice candle light warmer. Have read the light which melts it from the top really is best vs a basic warmer that heats the bottom. Any recommendations for a nice candle lamp? Thanks.

  23. Erin says:

Nest makes some amazing candles; I particularly like the Grapefruit. I also like Voluspa’s French Cade & Lavender and their Forbidden Fig.

  24. Sarah says:

Rekindle Candle company is local to us, and we get them at our farmers market. If you live nearby you can get a discount when you trade in one of their previous jars after you’ve finished the candle. The candles burn cleanly and for a long time. Dinner scents also come with the wooden wicks. Personally I love all the scents they’ve had, and am eyeing the agave and lemon peel at the moment.

  25. Shannon says:

I love anything autumn/winter scented and will burn them year round. I had the amazing experience to create a custom scent for our herbal apothecary. Mayernik Kitchen’s FORAGED candle is a mix of Pine, Patchouli & Musk. It is what we want you to think about when you think about our company! I think I will go burn one now!

  26. LeAnne Hale says:

If you want to support a small business, I highly recommend Savannah Candle Company! All of their collections are wonderful, but the Oglethorpe Collection scents are really great heading into fall. I also have some insider knowledge that some amazing fall and holiday limited edition scents are coming! https://savcandle.com/

  27. Wendy says:

Village Candle “After the Rain” is one of my favorites. It’s a airy, fresh scent with great throw…takes me back to just after we moved, when I was making a fresh start in a new city and home.

  28. Jen says:

Here in the North Carolina Mountains we have the Sparta Candle Company. They have become really well known for their soaps as welt thanks to their TicToc. But the candles are wonderful with some of the best scents I have ever experienced. A favorite for me is Little River. An incredible company with a wonderful product!

  29. Anna says:

1820 House candles out of East Palestine, OH are the absolute BEST candles out there! My favorite year-round scent is Geranium + Citrus Zest, but I’ve never found a candle that I didn’t love from their collection!

  30. Karen says:

Yikes! I can’t believe no one has praised Mythologie Candles! My favorites are Tudor House Library and Book of Kells. (Mythologiecandles.com)
And just to make your reading experience complete, check out August Uncommon Tea (august.la)! They have one called Library but my favorite for full or rainy days is Black Metallic – the name doesn’t seem right to me – it reminds me of dark, stormy days and good gothic romances – Rebecca, perhaps?! Also love their tea called Metropolitan! These two companies should team up and do book boxes!

    • Jenni says:

I was just about to recommend Mythologie Candles and those two candles!! And when it’s back in stock, the Book Nook candle from their High Cottage line is so lovely.
