Hello and happy Friday! We spent last weekend in the woods and off the grid; this weekend we’re lending a hand out in our community and working on projects here at home.

When we were camping I read one book every day, and it was glorious. I haven’t been able to read as much during the work week but I’m hoping to finish a book or two before the weekend is over.

I hope you have a lovely weekend!

My favorite finds from around the web:

  • What makes an iconic book cover? “There’s a famous saying about never forming your opinion of a book by the jacket adorning it. But most readers know that we do, in fact, judge books by their covers all the time.”
  • The Jane Austen Festival is going virtual this year! I’m one of the speakers, along with Soniah Kamal and Deborah Yaffe. The event is free but you need to register. (Workshops are available for purchase.)
  • Yoga alone, together. This is a profile of Yoga with Adriene but it’s also an interesting look at the evolution of at-home fitness.

Stay at Home Book Club Retreat:

We’ve been working on a very exciting event for our Book Club members! You may recall we put on our first book club retreat last year. We wanted to do it again this year but given the current circumstances, we decided to move our cozy in-person event online. We’re not trying to replicate an in-person experience, but instead, we aim to deliver bookish enjoyment and connection to readers right where you are. (Plus there’s a bright side: we can accommodate many more readers online and greatly reduce the ticket price.) Book club members can register here.

Book club is the place where we learn to read better, together. We read a monthly selection, plus host regular classes and educational content that helps us get more out of our reading lives. If you’re not currently a book club member, sign up here first. We hope to see you then!

Have a great weekend!

That’s a good question! They are holding alphabetized books, but because of their position on the shelves it’s more like T-Z than A-Z. 🙂

Twitter is running Rate my Skype Room tweets. You need an interesting bookcase, a plant, maybe some flowers and some interesting art to get a 10/10 rating. They are fun to read.

Hi love yoga with Adrian. Her January challenge is amazing. She works her students out in a very compassionate, understanding, and easy to follow flow.

TheCooking Gene is a fabulous read and also has a great black eyed pea hummus recipe in it!

I was interested in the article about book covers. I’m always seeing “and that cover!” from bookstagrammers. This is the book that deceived me—-“Almost Sisters” by Joshilyn Jackson. The cover shows what look to me like two aristocratic, exotic Spanish women, maybe in 1930’s Madrid. Or Castro’s Havana. With secrets. I think it’s going to be a historical fiction story. So imagine my surprise when I’m confronted with Leia, a comic book artist who draws Violence in Violet, a CANNIBAL, and who has just returned from a com-con after a one night stand with a black Batman, and is now carrying his bi-racial child. HUH?????? What the……? I kept looking at the cover and thinking, did they mix up two books at the publisher’s?? If they were trying to keep us from guessing the secret to the two almost sisters, they succeeded!

I just signed up for the Jane Austen Festival. Looks like a great weekend!I am English but have lived in the Boston area for a long time. I never have time to visit the Jane Austen sites when I go home – so really looking forward to the tours. Plus there’s a chance to buy stuff!
