Links I love

Interesting reads and favorite things for your weekend.

What are you up to this weekend? We are TIRED around here (which is ironic considering that extra hour, right? It is long gone). Around here I’m hoping to get some good sleep, take Daisy on many walks, return my overdue library books (gulp), and start my Thanksgiving dinner plans, as my kids informed me this morning it’s somehow just twelve days away.

I hope you have something to look forward to this weekend, and that this collection of interesting reads and favorite things helps ease you into that weekend frame of mind.

Our merch is back.

Will already has a zillion nostalgia pack orders to fulfill from yesterday’s Book Club event, so I’ll just quietly tell you here: after a longer-than-planned hiatus our shop is OPEN! It’s a family affair right now: I cleared out the book stacks so Will can package and ship from our home office table. Many tshirt sizes are already sold out so I recommend scooting over there asap for the best selection: we still have lots of tote bags, bookplates, book darts, and stickers, plus signed and personalized copies of all my books.

My favorite finds from around the web:

The Complete List of All 103 Books in Oprah’s Book Club. (Oprah Daily) How many have you read? (I’m at 42.)

What I Read to My Son When the World Is on Fire. (New York Times gift link) “Children’s literature fosters more than just basic awareness of the similarities and differences in our shared humanity: It conjures a realm where we can imagine — together — something better than what is.”

7 little things I’m loving lately: kitchen edition. (MMD) Small-ish things bringing me a disproportionate amount of happiness in the kitchen right now. Most of my favorites this week are right here in this post.

The Friendship Dip. (Culture Study substack) A thoughtful piece from Anne Helen Petersen about the ways friendships can ebb and change across the decades.

Why I Love Paperbacks. (Esquire) “For me, books are meant to be shared. Circulated. You don’t own a paperback; you have it for a little while and then it moves on with its life. The best you can do is help it find a good home.”

The Amazing Math Inside the Rubik’s Cube. (Popular Mechanics) I’m even more impressed now.

Branch out into a new genre with these literary fiction reads. (MMD) No need to be intimidated!

How to Do the Dishes. (Slate) “Peeking into someone’s cleaning routine holds all the greedy pleasure of peeking into a lit-up living room at night.”

There’s a 3-for-2 sale happening at Amazon: right now my books Don’t Overthink It and My Reading Life: A Book Journal are included (but I’d Rather Be Reading and My Reading Adventures: A Book Journal for Kids have at times been included throughout the week). This is your moment to stock up on holiday and birthday gifts! Or grab yourself a great crossword puzzle book or jigsaw puzzle.

What Is That White Stuff Oozing Out of My Chicken? (Bon Appétit) I can’t be the only one who’s always wondered.

Stella’s Epic Leaf Jump Compilation. (YouTube) A one-minute mood-booster: maybe happiness is watching a yellow lab rush a gigantic leaf pile, over and over.

Thanks to those that tipped me off to look for out-of-stock Sephora items at Kohl’s! I was able to get the Rare Beauty by Selena Gomez Mini Blush & Glow 4-Piece Set I was looking for. It’s good stuff.

7 surprising ways the public library can help you save money. (NPR Life Kit) It’s worth checking out your local library’s offerings.

18(!!!) audiobooks I’ve enjoyed this fall. (MMD) An eclectic round-up of some seriously great listening experiences.

Researcher uncovers a new body of work believed to be by Louisa May Alcott. (The Guardian) An interesting development.

Morning! When does your podcast with all the book suggestions for holiday buying drop? I am starting my list of books to buy family members and always get the BEST suggestions from your holiday podcast. Hope it is soon! Thanks

  2. Janet Kolarik says:

It looks like ALL the I’d Rather Be Reading t-shirt sizes are sold out! I’m so disappointed — I’d been stalking the link ever since I’d heard you were reopening. Will you be restocking?

    • Anne Bogel says:

Janet, I just double-checked. You’re correct that we’re running low on tshirt inventory but as of right now we still have I’d Rather Be Reading shirts! At this moment the only size we are OUT of is M. Our What Should I Read Next tshirt stores are significantly more depleted.

We intend to restock, but I don’t know the timeline.

Surprised to find I’ve read 54 books from Oprah’s list. Hers was the first celebrity book list I remember and in the beginning I followed it closely. Looking over the list brought to mind some great book memories. Now I think I’ll go back and get some of the later titles I missed as I stopped following as more sources became available.

  4. Shannon Cosner says:

66 Oprah books! Almost all of the first 40 that I waited each month for the title to be released. It was a bit of a trip down memory lane.

  5. Jill Duffin says:

Library article was a good reminder of what’s available. Our local public library has bicycles( with baskets!) to borrow including an adult 3-wheeler. I’ve read about a third of Oprah’s list but will definitely add some to my TBR. Thanks.

39 on Oprah’s list, so many missing from the middle when the kids were at the “handful” stage. Thank you for the link, lots I had forgotten and want to read. I wonder if the roasted sweet potato recipe would work with winter squash? We have csa abundance right now. As usual, your Friday roundup is my fave.
