Happy Friday, readers! This weekend I’m in Tampa to talk I’d Rather Be Reading—and all things books and reading—with booksellers from the South (some of whom had to dodge a hurricane to get here). Then I’m headed to Mount Dora, near Orlando Saturday night to meet readers at Barrel of Books and Games. (No tickets required—would love to see you there!)

• With ‘The Public,’ Emilio Estevez is banking on an audience for kinder, gentler movies. The trailer for this movie made its way through the MMD Slack channels months ago and I hope it makes it to the big screen.
• 5 household cleaner combinations you should never, ever mix. “First of all, most cleaning products are plenty effective on their own. Plus, combining them could be toxic—and in some cases lethal.”
• Art matters because your imagination can change the world. “Libraries are about freedom. Freedom to read, freedom of ideas, freedom of communication. They are about education, about entertainment, about making safe spaces and about access to information.”
• ‘So shocked’: Customer wins bookshop in raffle. Next time I need to know about the raffle before it’s over.
• No need to reply. “I love adding this to my emails now—I feel like it’s tossing a surprise daisy on someone’s desk, or passing out a free cup of coffee.”

One year ago: Parenting the good kids and the odd ones out. “It’s normal for kids to need help understanding who they are, what they’re like, what they need. Teaching kids to self-evaluate is key, especially for the kids who are struggling to find their place in the world.”
Two years ago: The most popular books on the blog this summer. “As it so often goes with lists of the most popular anything, some of these are surprising to me, some not at all. Based on this list, I can unreservedly say you have great taste.”
Three years ago: When you’re good at overcomplicating things. “My maximizer nature can make me crazy. I’ve wasted so much time in my life rabbit-trailing to find the ‘best’ option.”
Four years ago: Trigger points. “Being able to transform a vague sense of unease into a trigger diagnosis and strategies that let you avoid it or actually do something about it will change your life.”
Five years ago: Fall scheduling angst. (A confessional, of sorts.) “The day really went fine. The kids did great. Objectively, it was a good day. But I felt really uneasy about the whole thing and couldn’t quite put my finger on why.”

I work in a public library in an economically depressed community. The Public has been on our radar for a year and we are desperately eager to see it. Watching the trailer made us all nod our heads with understanding. Really hope it find a distributor.
