I’m a convert to natural skincare. The past few years I’ve played around with the oil cleansing method and replaced my cosmetics counter cleansers with olive oil bar soap. I’ve ditched my drugstore lotion for apricot kernel oil, and replaced my phthalates-ridden shampoo in favor of natural brands.
I like knowing that I’m doing my body good by avoiding phthalates and parabens and all that, but I love finding natural solutions that are not only safer, but work better than their conventional counterparts.
This simple nail scrub is my favorite natural skincare trick. It’s quick and simple, takes just two ingredients, and delivers better results than any commercial product I’ve used.
Here’s what to do:
In a small bowl (or the palm of your hand), combine a small amount of coconut oil with an equal amount of white sugar, and squish into a paste. (Coconut oil melts at 76 degrees–if yours is melty, put it in the freezer for a minute or two to solidify.) I use Nutiva Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil that I order from Amazon. I’ve also been happy with the Spectrum Naturals brand I can get at my local Whole Foods or Kroger.
If you don’t have coconut oil on hand, you can substitute olive oil.
Using a pea-sized amount for each hand, dab a bit onto each of your nails, massaging into your nails and cuticles. After a minute or two, gently push back your cuticles. Don’t force anything!
Towel off the sugar and excess oil. (You’ll get better results if you wait a few minutes before washing your hands.)
You can keep any extra scrub around for a week or so.
The scrub gives my nails a beautiful, natural shine, and it’s a lot easier to maintain good-looking natural nails than to keep polished ones looking pretty. I like to use this method every few days to keep my nails and the surrounding skin smooth and healthy.
Now I’ve told you my favorite natural skincare tip. What’s yours?
