Interesting reads and favorite things for your weekend

What are you up to this weekend? I think we’re finally getting a little bit of a breather around here: I hope to make some progress on this ridiculously hard puzzle, tidy up the Summer Reading Guide books that are still in a towering stack by my desk, and maybe start rewatching The Bear with Will since the new season drops June 27.

I hope you have something to look forward to for these next few days, and that this collection of interesting reads and favorite things helps ease you into that weekend frame of mind.

Get your Summer Reading Guide!

We’ve historically released this just before Memorial Day weekend here in the U.S. so you’re ready for your summer season. The 2024 Guide is here—click here to get yours.

My favorite finds from around the web:

Keira Knightley to Star in ‘The Woman in Cabin 10’ Film Adaptation at Netflix (EXCLUSIVE). (Variety) Big news!

Inside Reese Witherspoon’s Literary Empire. (New York Times gift link) Profile by Elisabeth Egan: “First and foremost, she wants books by women, with women at the center of the action who save themselves.”

Last year’s sold out Steve Madden Amira Tiered Cotton Midi Dress from Nordstrom is back for a new season, in beautiful colors. (Though mine is navy, of course. I’m a Medium.) This fancier Eileen Fisher dress is way marked down: I own this in Atlantis and love it; it’s easy to dress up or down. (I typically reach for a Medium as a starting point with any brand, but in Eileen Fisher I’m consistently an XS.)

Immerse yourself in these 20 full cast recording audiobooks. (MMD)

If you want to belong, find a third place. (Vox) “Third places are trust and relationship builders: You encounter a person frequently enough that you naturally graduate from a polite smile to small talk to perhaps deeper conversation.”

I’m excited to talk with Lucy Foley about her new book, The Midnight Feast: A Novel on June 20! (Eventbrite) Carmichael’s Bookstore is hosting the event, which will be held at the Clifton Theater. Tickets include admission for one, signing access, and one hardcover copy of the new book.

The myth of the fairytale wardrobe. (The Times) In other words: stop looking for “the best” or “the one” white tee/button down/you name it: “The fashion industry wouldn’t, of course, have it any other way. If we solved the problem of our wardrobes once and for all, we wouldn’t need anything new to put in them.”

Don’t look for “the best” anything, yet I’m quite fond of this inexpensive Old Navy white tee and this sturdier American Giant white (leaning ivory) slub tee. (I’m a Medium in each.) I could live all summer in white tops and navy bottoms: is it just me? (Looks like the code DARCY will still get you 20% off your first American Giant order.)

France: Mostly Here for the Butter. The new season of Strong Sense of Place kicks off today!

Bulk bins are where slow food meets the checkout aisle—and they’re changing how many Americans shop. (Taste) “They know they can’t compete on convenience, so what they offer instead is an experience that’s more human, connected, and local.”

Let’s go to the bookstore: international edition. (MMD) Photos and musings galore from my recent trip to Denmark and Germany.

I Hated Summer Camp As A Kid. Then I Went To One For Adults. (Bustle) It’s not Book Camp (MMD) but it sure sounds like a fun experience.

What is Anne Hathaway Trying to Tell Us? (Culture Study) A scholarly celebrity deep dive (my favorite kind) and an assessment of her publicity tour for The Idea of You. (Don’t miss the link to the portal piece!)

From our archives:

23 recommended reads for those traveling to Chicago. For anyone planning a trip to Chicago or looking for some armchair travel!

Two favorite summer drink recipes for summer reading season. The perfect mocktail and cocktail for this summer!

14 books about endearingly quirky families. They’ve got to be both quirky AND endearing.

Have a great weekend!

Hi MMD Team! Just a heads up that the past couple of weeks, the thumbnails on your website for each blog post are duplicated by Friday. On Chrome and MS Edge, I am seeing the International Bookstore image across all links this morning. Same issue for Chrome on my Android. Thank you!

Anne, thanking you for posting last year about Peacock streaming’s low annual price at the time, I enjoyed it for the year. So thanks for sharing that with your readers.

It’s better, IMO; it contains actual fruit juice. My favorites are lime, raspberry lime, and strawberry lemonade. They’re delicious on their own or as mixers.

Oh, how I wish clothing lines would make more dresses with sleeves! I like the Steve Madden Midi dress but would like it in a version with short/elbow length sleeves to be worn in more seasons (I’m in SoCal). So many dresses I like are sleeveless, and my upper arms, while OK, aren’t what they used to be. (OK, I’m 75, but even so!)
