What’s in store for your weekend? We have big plans around here, with lots of theater and visiting family and (I imagine) the new Taylor Swift album playing nonstop. I hope you have something to look forward to these next few days, and that this collection of interesting reads and favorite things helps ease you into that weekend frame of mind.
My favorite finds from around the web:
- The A Man Called Otto trailer starring Tom Hanks is here! Am I a total sap if this made me tear up a little?
- Taylor Swift Reveals Her Writing Process In Nashville Songwriter Awards Speech. Love the Quill, Lyrics, Fountain Pen, and Glitter Gel Pen genres. Happy New Album Day to all who celebrate!
- What Counts as a Bestseller? It’s complicated.
- Anthony Horowitz On PBS/BritBox’s ‘Magpie Murders’: “It’s The First Time I’ve Really Got A TV Adaptation Right”. Fascinating behind-the-scenes. Team member Shannan says the first episode was fantastic!
- These clickable markers come highly recommended.
- The Singer I Loved Knew the Truth About No-Good Men and the No-Good World. A great tribute to Loretta Lynn. No one writes about music and musicians like Hanif Abdurraqib.
- I love these phone case covers—and not just because they remind me of my favorite jigsaw puzzles!
- What petting a dog can do for your brain. Daisy says she already knew.
- I’m in My Costume Era. R. Eric Thomas had me from the first line: “Let me tell you about my Emily Dickinson wallpaper. “
- These Books Prove We’re Living In a Golden Age of Horror. Even this wimpy reader has read a few of these! If you’re looking to dip your toes into horror, Brenna and I discussed the genre (and our contrasting preferences) in Patreon bonus #161: Navigating a frightful (and delightful) genre.
- My daughter adores her new mom jeans (just $25!).
- America’s best regional desserts: 15 sweet treats to try. The description of our Kentucky sweet treat made me giggle.
Behind-the-Scenes of WSIRN Episode 351: Book Club Favorites: LIVE from Bookmarks!
So many of you have said this week’s special episode of What Should I Read Next was balm for the soul. My conversation with TJ Klune, Andrew Sean Greer, Brendan Slocumb, and Tia Williams went in very unexpected places (to say the least!). Their stories had readers laughing one minute and crying the next. I’m so glad we could share it with you. (Photo credit: @bookstagramETC)
Don’t miss these posts:
- 15 riveting books with unreliable narrators or ambiguous endings. It’s the perfect time of year for this kind of book.
- 16 memorable memoirs told in essays, stories, and snapshots. A great option for anyone dealing with a short attention span.
- A bounty of beautiful bookmarks: 20 charming place-holders and page-markers for bookworms to gift and enjoy. Bookmarks make a great gift for yourself or someone on your gift list!
- 7 spooky (not scary) short story collections. These short story collections will get you in the mood for Halloween without keeping you awake all night!
Have a great weekend!

If it makes you a sap, I’m right there with you.
Oh me three!! Love, love, love that book and Tom Hanks! ❤️
Taylor Swift is young, beautiful, and earned the accolades. My brother is oldish (but my youngest brother) and grayish but he too is in the Nashville Songwriter’s Association Hall of Fame. I bring it up whenever possible. His name is Mark D Sanders.
This comment makes me really happy as a mom <3 I'm hoping my children love their siblings when they're oldish and grayish enough to brag about them just like you!
Oh my goodness, Kris! I recognized your brother’s name and when I looked him up, I realized why- he’s written some of my favorite songs. If he were my brother, I’d bring him up whenever possible, too. Such a talent!
We just started watching “Magpie Murders.” Looks like it is going to be fun!
I didn’t even know there was a Swedish film version of A Man Called Ove! Love this book and will be watching that tonight, then waiting happily for the Tom Hanks movie.
That Abdurraqib piece choked me up. So good.
Wow, you hit it out of the park with this week’s Links I Love! I read and enjoyed nearly all the articles! But the best was the trailer of A Man Called Otto—I had no idea they were going to change the name to Otto, and I had wondered if your blurb was a mistake…But it looks SO EXCELLENT! The speakers on my computer aren’t working, but I could track every single scene in the trailer. Tom Hanks makes anything good, but this story was good already, so what a double-whammy! Thank you for letting me know about it.
Maybe there still is time to change the title of the Tom Hanks movie. Otto, not Ove? Sigh!
I wonder why they changed the name to Otto from Ove.. I’m off to google!
My guess is to make it easier for Americans to pronounce.
Those phone cases! They have a Christmas pack and I just ordered it for myself ❤️❤️❤️
You should head to Hurricane Mill, it’s a pretty awesome place. I love that she spent her last years there while tourists like me wandered around her gorgeous surroundings. It was kind of her to share.
