It’s that time of year where the heat and humidity make me despair fall will ever arrive … but it sure helps to have autumnal events to look forward to. They remind me cooler temperatures and fall leaves are on their way, along with other means of seasonal delight.
And we have so many delightful things in store for you these next few months! I hope you’ll mark your calendars, prepare your To Be Read lists, and join us for any or all of the following festivities.
The Fall Book Preview
Join us for our fourth Fall Book Preview, where I’ll share a curated list of the season’s hottest new titles, plus the info you need to decide which belong on your TBR.
This year’s Fall Book Preview is set for September 8 at 7 pm EDT. In this video event, I’ll share the books I’ve most enjoyed, the ones I’m most looking forward to reading, and the ones the industry is most excited about, all with release dates from the very end of August through year’s end.
Our Fall Book Preview event is exclusively for members of our MMD Book Club community and What Should I Read Next Patreon “Book Lover” supporters. Our communities will also receive a printable with every title included in our preview.
Our team has been talking about putting on Trivia Night for ages and we’re thrilled to finally offer this fun bookish event for our What Should I Read Next Patreon community! We’ll share specifics soon but patrons will want to reserve October 20 at 7 pm ET. Join Patreon today so you don’t miss out on this bookish good time.
This Fall in MMD Book Club
We’re reading three books perfect for fall (along with accompanying flight picks) that will provide ample fodder for discussion, insight, and readerly growth. We’ll also talk with authors Hala Alyan and Alissa Wilkinson about their books, their research and writing experiences, and what they love to read.
Main pick: Breaking Bread with the Dead by Alan Jacobs
Flight picks: The Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare. (Click here for an explanation of our flight pick terminology.)
Main pick: Salty: Lessons on Eating, Drinking, and Living from Revolutionary Women by Alissa Wilkinson
Flight pick: Home Cooking by Laurie Colwin
Main pick: The Reading List by Sara Nisha Adams
No flight pick this month.
Part of the fun of reading in community is learning together: we enjoy classes that help us build our reading skills, making us more insightful readers and better bookish conversationalists, as well as classes that support our reading lifestyle, like learning how to book journal or up our #bookstagram game. (We record all classes so they’re ready for you whenever your schedule allows.)
Please note: you don’t have to participate in every single thing to benefit from your MMD Book Club experience! Think of it as a buffet, and fill your plate with what you most want to enjoy right now. But know that everything here is included with your membership.
What’s the difference between Book Club and Patreon?
For anyone trying to determine which option is the best fit for them, both abound in bookish enthusiasm and community. Our What Should I Read Next patreon community is podcast-centered: we share peeks behind the scenes, bonus episodes, and outtakes and commentary about the show. We also invite our members to influence future episodes with their suggestions and poll and survey responses.
The MMD Book Club is the place where we are learning to read better, together. This is the one place where we do explicit readerly education (among other things, of course!). We host community, classes, and conversation in that place, as well as purposefully seek to build the skills of the reading life, whether that means learning to choose good books for our own enjoyment, exploring different methods of book journaling, learning to write better reviews or request Advanced Review Copies from publishers, or write interesting and persuasive book reviews.
I can’t wait to read with you this season. Happy reading, friends!
