a lifestyle blog for book lovers
coffee and books

My favorite finds from around the web:

• Gate A-4. “She had pulled a sack of homemade mamool cookies— little powdered sugar crumbly mounds stuffed with dates and nuts— from her bag and was offering them to all the women at the gate. To my amazement, not a single traveler declined one. It was like a sacrament. The traveler from Argentina, the mom from California, the lovely woman from Laredo— we were all covered with the same powdered sugar.”

• On learning to love my cynic voice. “My faith has turned out not to be a straight path at all but a spiraling mountain road full of switch-backs and turns….and maybe my Cynicism was never a road-block that I needed to get past…but rather, an essential part of my heart.”

• “That was my own little MFA” — novelist Camille Pagán on frustration and success. “Her five books that didn’t work were written to fulfill the expectations of being a well-reviewed, well-compensated novelist publishing with a major house. For Life and Other Near Death Experiences, “I wrote it for myself,” she says. “That’s what I plan to do for every book going forward.”

• Why no and yes are BFFs. “I think lots of us have been saying Yes to the wrong things. It squelches our creativity, steals our joy, wastes our time and ultimately makes us feel helpless. I want you to see the value in making the time to do those things you are uniqely gifted to do, it makes me sad when we ignore this–because I’ve done that and it feels just awful.”

Favorite instagram:

November sunset

“It was November–the month of crimson sunsets, parting birds, deep, sad hymns of the sea, passionate wind-songs in the pines.” – L. M. Montgomery, Anne of Green Gables. (Follow me on instagram @annebogel.)

One year ago: On showing up. “We almost didn’t go. Because we left in a mad rush, we weren’t prepared and didn’t have anything to offer: no food, no family photos, not even a bottle of wine. We went anyway.”

Just discovered your blog about a year ago and had not read the piece about going to church. YES. This is how I feel every single time. Equally painful lately is watching the news.
