Twitterature (September 2013 Edition)

twitterature monthly reading linkup short reviews

Welcome to the Twitterature link-up! For the lowdown, head over here, or try this Cliff Notes version: this is the place to share short, casual reviews of books you’ve been reading.

Here’s what I’ve been reading

The Time in Between

The Time in Between: A Novel, Maria Duenas

Well-crafted, sweeping novel set during the Spanish Civil War. The dialogue stinks. Read it anyway. #historybuffs #couture #spies

Mr. Penumbra

Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore: A Novel, Robin Sloane

“Harry Potter meets National Treasure,” according to Jessica. Exactly. Nerdy, fast, fun. #bookstorelove #SF #Google

When We Were on Fire

When We Were on Fire: A Memoir of Consuming Faith, Tangled Love, and Starting Over, Addie Zierman

I related way too much to Addie Zierman’s debut. Worthwhile for anyone who has complicated thoughts about growing up evangelical. #comingthisfall

Bright Side of Disaster

The Bright Side of Disaster, Katherine Center

Meh. This is a first-time novel and it shows. Not terrible, but not nearly as good as Get Lucky or The Lost Husband. #smartchicklit

Maisie Dobbs

Maisie Dobbs, Jacqueline Winspear

Scores of you told me I’d love these British mysteries set between the wars. You were right. #mystery #series #9bookstogo

Jesus Feminist

Jesus Feminist: An Invitation to Revisit the Bible’s View of Women, Sarah Bessey

I love @sarahbessey’s blog, but was genuinely surprised at how much blog was in the book. I got over it. Fresh and thought-provoking. #comingthisfall

Smitten Kitchen

The Smitten Kitchen Cookbook, Deb Perelman

What’s this–a cookbook in #twitterature? This one earned it. Delightful prose, droolworthy photos, completely fabulous recipes. #thewholepackage #yum

The next Twitterature link-up will be on Tuesday, October 15.

I absolutely loved Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore. So much fun. I listened to it on audiobook and the narrator did a really good job of capturing the different voices. I think this one is going on my re-read list.

  2. Stacey says:

Yeah! I find myself counting down the days to Twitterature! I love to grow my TBR pile. I loved the Smitten Kitchen too. So funny to think about ‘reading’ a cookbook but I hear you! I did the same thing with Jenny Rosentrach’s Dinner: A Love Story. Thanks for sharing all your reads!

  3. Becca says:

I love, love, love this link up! Thank you for hosting it – this is my first time linking up, but I have followed for a bit and enjoy the quick glimpse and reviews of what others are reading. You have such fabulous recommendations!

  4. Kate says:

I LOVE the idea of doing Twitter style recaps! I never know how to tackle my reviews when doing several in a post. Going to have to jump on board your link up!

  5. Sarah says:

The Time in Between sounds really interesting! I did study abroad in Spain in college and studied the Spanish Civil war quite a bit for my Spanish minor. It would be great to read a novel about it that isn’t in Spanish! (Pretty sure I couldn’t do that anymore anyway. Sad face.). I’m so happy that you enjoyed Maisie Dobbs! I really like that series.

  6. Shana Norris says:

I can’t wait to read When We Were On Fire. I’ve read several of Addie’s blog posts that took my breath away because her words so closely mirrored my own thoughts and feelings.

Beyond the fact that I can identify with what she’s writing, there is HOW she writes it. Her writing is absolutely extraordinary. I am so in awe of people who can write like that.

  7. Traci says:

I’m late to the party (vacation brain) but I read Maisie Dobbs after seeing it mentioned by others on the Twitterature. Love it and can’t get enough. The second book surpasses the first, amazingly enough. I also read The Bright Side of Disaster and agree with you. One of these days I’ll link up. Thank you for making me not feel bad about all the reading I do! 😉

  8. Mayra says:

Another function of ‘registry optimizers’ is to clean your computer.
The roommates said that they ‘tried unsuccessfully” to get King to move out of the apartment. Head over to and check out the online resource for young professionals in the gases and welding industries.
