a lifestyle blog for book lovers

A few weeks ago, I told you about my see-saw marriage. After that post went up, I received quite a few emails, tweets, and comments congratulating me on taking the step of hiring some household help.

I’m grateful for those thoughts, but you should know: I’ve had help for a while now. In fact, I even have a weekly day off, and in this short, 3 minute video blog, I tell you all about it.

I believe in being honest and open about what life is really like; thanks so much for watching!

What would you do with a day off?

When my firstborn was tiny, I had a new neighbor who moved here not knowing a soul and with no family. One of the first things she did was call the college down the road and find a babysitter for one full day every week.

She didn’t work, and I thought that was crazy-indulgent at the time. I don’t think so anymore.

  1. I am praying about how I could work something like this into my life. It would be helpful for blog writing, but also for studying for the children’s ministry I do, as well as paperwork for our business.
    Thanks for sharing the how-tos.
Btw, I love your hair this deep brown color. It looks gorgeous on you!

Since Asa was born (10 weeks ago) we have hired a babysitter to come every other week. During her 4 hours here I work upstairs either on the computer or cleaning! It has been incredibly refreshing! 4 kids in 4 years has made my brain foggy and so I appreciate the breather! 🙂

I really like what Adriana said. I’d like to be in a position to do something similar for my own children down the road.

Anne, great job with the vlog. Just thinking about putting myself on video makes me cringe.

(LOVE the bookshelves in the background.)

Anne, we don’t have grandkids but we do have some young moms in our life and give them days off much like what you describe with your mom. It’s a great blessing for us, that’s for sure!

You homeschool? I want to know more about how you manage that, because I homeschool too (2nd and 1st grade with a 4-year-old not doing school yet) and it takes a lot of time and energy. I’m always trying to organize it into being a little easier, but it hasn’t really gotten easier.

A fervent YES to it taking lots of time and energy. And for me, having multiple students is multiple times harder than just having one! I’ve written a little about homeschooling, but not a ton. I probably go into the most detail here.

We’re in our third year and I feel like I’m finally finding a rhythm that works for us. But of course things are always changing, so we’ll see how long that lasts. 🙂

Anne, the fact that your mother does this has always impressed me, but it is the JOY with which she does it that is truly inspiring to me.

  7. Anne,
SO awesome! It’s so fun to actually hear your voice, not just through your words but as if you are here in my house! 🙂 I had an afternoon off last fall, and then my mom’s career has new demands that haven’t made that an option. But..(hopeful part) we’ve been talking about having a college student come in now and again to babysit/play-with etc. And now I’m totally convicted to NOT use it for grocery shopping!!! Thanks Anne!

  8. I’m a bit behind on reading (or, in this case, viewing) posts so I just saw this, and it’s funny to me because earlier today I put out a plea on twitter for any of my local friends who might have a lead on a baby sitter to let me know. I’m feeling fairly desperate for a block of time when I can concentrate – I need to get our taxes done and that does not work well with the 10 minutes at a time I manage to piece together currently.

Anyway, that is so great that you have that day. What a blessing!

I love this! This is exactly how I feel when my puppy is in day care once or twice a week. No distractions so I can deep dive into my work. You’re so right about how we all need more than those 20-minute bursts here and there. I really appreciate your honesty.
