Literary Tourism: Prague

The first book of Laini Taylor's wildly creative and highly original YA fantasy series is set in the beautiful city of Prague—an absolutely perfect setting for the otherworldly battle a young art student inadvertently gets tangled up in. Many readers who don't typically read these genres have found this series a delightful surprise.

This was my first Mawer book, and I was surprised to discover it read like a political thriller or a spy novel. It begins in the midst of the Prague Spring, in summer 1968: James and Ellie are Oxford University students on holiday, determined to see as much of Europe as they can before school resumes again in the fall. It’s pure chance that brings them to Prague. Elsewhere in the city, British diplomat Sam falls headlong in love with the Czech activist Lenka, a leader among the young people's political movement for a more open Czechoslovakia. Evidence that Prague is living in a new and freer era is everywhere—and yet the reader knows what the characters do not: it's only a matter of time before Russian tanks roll in to violently reassert Communist control. Fascinating and moving.

This coming of age magical realism tale is set during the 1968 Prague Spring. Dyslexic teen Alicia is desperate to escape her home life. She answers a newspaper ad and learns typing from Pani Agáta, an older woman with secrets of her own. Eventually she becomes a secretary for the Czech Communist government. When Pani Agáta gives her an ancient unicorn tapestry, Alicia starts having strange dreams, even as she grows more powerful.
I’ve only read a little Kafka—if you study German in college, like I did, you can’t help but read him—but the combination of our recent trip to Prague and the frequent references to him in Jane Smiley’s 13 Ways of Looking at the Novel bumped him up my TBR. One day Josef K. is a respectable banker. The next he is arrested for reasons he’s never given. He’s imprisoned and awaits a trial that may never come. We are plunged into his existential dread as Kafka shows the inhumanity of totalitarianism. Kafka’s known for his insightful yet absurdist commentary on modern life; I’ve heard The Trial is emblematic of his mature work.

Perry’s Gothic novel retells Charles Maturin’s 1820 novel Melmoth the Wanderer. Helen Franklin is a British translator working in Prague. Her friend Karel shows her a letter he found at the library, which details the dark superstition of Melmoth the Witness. It’s said Melmoth was there at Christ’s resurrection but denied what she saw, thus dooming her to wander the world, forever trying to persuade other despairing souls to join her. It’s just a story—but then Karel suddenly disappears and Helen begins to think someone is watching her.
