Immerse yourself in these 20 full cast recording audiobooks

Full cast recording audiobooks are immersive experiences

I have long said the best audiobooks don’t simply replace the experience of reading with your eyes but instead enhance the book, adding layers to the reading experience. Nowhere is this more true than with audiobooks that feature full cast recordings. While audiobooks most commonly feature one or perhaps two narrators, a full cast adds to the characterization and dynamics, in addition to making it easier for the listener to distinguish between characters.

Great audio performances elevate a book and pull you in, going beyond on-paper reading for an immersive event. It’s the modern equivalent of a radio play, except no one has to wait to listen to the next installment. In addition to the full cast, there might be music or other noises to really help you feel like you’re there in the world of the story.

Today’s audiobook list includes some of your favorite narrators as well as celebrity voices you’ll likely recognize from non-book projects. If you’re looking for a place to get started with audiobooks, or if you’re an avid listener in search of your next read, try one of these full cast recordings for an immersive and textured listening experience.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

This novel told in letters is sweet and sunny, even though it's set during a dark period of history. The action unfolds on the British island of Guernsey (and you'll want to book your trip immediately). A testament to the power of literature, but a love story at heart. The audiobook narrated by Paul Boehmer, Susan Duerden, Rosalyn Landor, John Lee, and Juliet Mills is fantastic. 8 hrs 6 mins. More info →

Six of Crows

Six of Crows

Author: Leigh Bardugo

I enjoyed this novel from bestselling author Leigh Bardugo. A criminal mastermind teams up with an unconventional crew to pull off the heist of the century. They have to break into an extremely secure location and retrieve a scientist and his formula or the world as they know it will be destroyed. With twists and turns aplenty, I enjoyed experiencing another side of Bardugo’s Grishaverse. I enjoyed this on audio.

Sleeping Giants

Sleeping Giants

Author: Sylvain Neuvel
Back when I first read this 2016 release I didn't reach for sci fi as often as I do now: I never would have picked it up on my own and I'm grateful a trusted reader gave me a strong nudge! The audiobook version is truly top-notch, as the story consists of a series of interviews and correspondence, and audiobook readers feel like they're listening in to the characters' communication. It begins in the past, when a little girl falls through the earth and lands in the palm of a gigantic metal hand. Flash forward a few decades, and that girl is all grown up, an esteemed researcher working with her peers to find more of this being's body parts strewn all over the globe. This one especially feels like an old-fashioned radio drama, as narrated by a full cast that includes Andy Secombe, Laurel Lefkow, Eric Meyers, Liza Ross, and more. 8 hrs 28 mins. More info →

Lincoln in the Bardo

Lincoln in the Bardo

Author: George Saunders
This 2017 release from Saunders is a story about America's 16th president and his grief in the wake of his son Willie's death in 1862. The "bardo" of the title is a Tibetan concept: it's a spiritual landscape—a kind of in-between place—where we are sent between physical lives. Willie died of typhoid at age 11, plunging Lincoln into deep grief. Saunders uses this real event as a jumping-off point to explore the near-unbearable grief of a father, linking it to the disarray of the country he leads at the height of its Civil War, and imagines how Lincoln's despair changed the outcome of the war. The star-studded cast includes Nick Offerman, David Sedaris, George Saunders, Carrie Brownstein, Miranda July, Lena Dunham, and more. 7 hrs 25 mins. More info →

There There: A Novel

There There: A Novel

Author: Tommy Orange
Orange's multigenerational, multi-voiced novel offers a nuanced glimpse into contemporary Native American life in Oakland, California through the experiences and perspectives of twelve wide-ranging characters. As they prepare for the city's first Big Oakland Powwow at the Oakland Coliseum, the lives of Orange's diverse characters become intertwined: an aspiring filmmaker, a man who's taught himself traditional Native dance with YouTube videos, a woman traveling to meet her grandchildren for the first time—on the condition that she remains sober. I'm amazed at how each distinct voice rings true, and how he weaves the disparate storylines together. It's also full of triggers, so sensitive readers be aware. Narrated by Darrell Dennis, Shaun Taylor-Corbett, Alma Ceurvo, Kyla Garcia. 8 hrs. More info →

To Night Owl From Dogfish

To Night Owl From Dogfish

This collaboration between two successful authors—one who primarily writes for kids, the other for grown-ups—features two twelve-year old girls living on opposite coasts who strike up an unwanted correspondence after they discover their single fathers fell in love at a building conference and are now dating. This relationship is not good news to either of them, as they make clear in the ensuing emails that comprise the book. Their situation goes from bad to worse when their fathers force them to attend the same summer camp, hoping they’ll become friends. Things go horribly wrong in more ways than one, but there's not a page here that doesn’t feel fresh, funny, charming, and real. A big-hearted story for readers of all ages. Narrators include Imani Parks, Cassandra Morris, Sullivan Jones, Bahni Turpin, and more. 6 hrs 13 mins More info →

Daisy Jones & The Six

Daisy Jones & The Six

A full cast, including Jennifer Beals, Benjamin Bratt, and Judy Greer, elevates this rock-umentary about a fictional 1970s band into a best-of-the-year audiobook experience. The plot revolves around Billy Dunne, the tortured, talented lead singer for the Six, and Daisy Jones, the beautiful, soulful girl with a troubled past who catapults the Six to fame when she begins singing—and writing—their songs. We know from the beginning that the story is about why the band broke up, and the reasons are both expected and hold a big surprise, unfurled in an engrossing story of sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll. 9 hrs 3 mins. Lovely War

Lovely War

Author: Julie Berry
Berry's surprising mix of World War I, a love story, and Greek mythology has delighted legions of readers aged 12 to 102. The story begins with Aphrodite and Ares walking into a swanky Manhattan hotel during WWII, and soon enough Aphrodite's husband Hephaestus challenges her to show him what love really looks like. She obliges, and takes the reader back in time to meet four young lovers in 1917 Britain, showing her fellow gods how each couple fell in love, and what they mean to each other. It sounds unlikely but the interesting narrative structure totally works. I read this in print the first time but revisited it via the excellent full-cast audiobook, which includes Jayne Entwistle, Allan Corduner, Don Lee, Dion Graham, the author, and even more talented voices. 12 hrs 57 mins. Red at the Bone

Red at the Bone

In her poetic voice, Woodson crafts a narrative that follows a family over decades but keeps the reader in the moment. The book opens with a special coming-of-age ceremony. Melody enters the room in her grandparents' Brooklyn home wearing the same dress her mother wore sixteen years ago. From there, Woodson weaves Melody and her mother's stories together in a lyrical novel about legacy, parenthood, ambition and desire. For a completely immersive experience, listen to this one on audio. The author and Bahni Turpin are among a full cast of narrators who bring the family to life. 3 hrs 52 mins. More info →

Slay

Slay

Author: Brittney Morris
I raced through this absorbing YA read; it would make a good flight pick for Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow. At school, Kiera Johnson is an honor roll student, math tutor, and one of the only Black kids in her classes. But in the world she's created for herself, she is one of hundreds of thousands of Black gamers dueling in the online role-playing card game, Slay. Kiera is the game developer, but no one in her "real life" knows about the project, and her identity is a secret online. When Slay is mentioned in relation to the murder of a Kansas City teen, Kiera is distraught. News of the game and its Black-players-only rule reach media outlets, and Kiera's safe haven becomes a point of national discussion. When an anonymous troll enters the game and threatens to sue over discrimination, Kiera is determined to protect herself, her game, and her Blackness in a world that doesn't understand. Narrated by Kiersey Clemons, Michael Boatman, Alexandra Grey, Dominic Hoffman, and Sisi Aisha Johnson. 8 hrs 27 mins. More info →

The Guest List

The Guest List

Author: Lucy Foley
This 2020 mystery puts a modern spin on Agatha Christie's classic And Then There Were None, setting a destination wedding on a remote Irish island, accessible only by boat, with guests whose lives are connected in ways they never could have guessed. When a magazine publisher weds a handsome reality tv star, she wants her wedding to be magazine-worthy: the designer gown, the atmospheric location, everything perfect to the last detail. But when the guests arrive, including old colleagues, boarding school friends, unreliable family, and untrustworthy friends—things begin going wrong, as long-buried secrets threaten to burst forth at exactly the wrong time. And then they find the dead body. Told in rotating points of view, this was cleverer than I'd expected, and I especially enjoyed the full-cast narration by Jot Davies, Chloe Massey, Olivia Dowd, Aoife McMahon, Sarah Ovens, and Rich Keeble. (I would have appreciated a content warning for self-harm; a murder mystery is certain to have triggers but that one took me by surprise.) 10 hrs 22 mins. More info →

Songs for the End of the World

Songs for the End of the World

Author: Saleema Nawaz
Nawaz wrote this speculative work between 2013 and 2019, but its contents and publication timing made it eerily prescient when it came out in March 2020. The story moves back and forth in time and between multiple perspectives as it follows a first responder in New York, a pregnant singer, and an author, all living through a global coronavirus pandemic. I avoided all pandemic books for a while but I'm glad I picked this one up; its themes of resilience and hope struck just the right notes for me and I named it one of my favorite audiobooks of 2020. Narrated by a full cast including Alex Payton-Beesley, Amelia Sargisson, and more. 14 hrs 40 mins. More info →
The Cold Millions

The Cold Millions

Author: Jess Walter
This is a story of two brothers who get mixed up in the labor movement in 1909 in Spokane, Washington. After the heartbreaking loss of their mother, the two young men travel to the nearest big city to find work and make a future for themselves. But their plans are halted when the brothers end up at a labor protest and then in jail. As a result of their circumstances, they get mixed up with activist Elizabeth Gurley Flynn, a real-life labor leader. Hers was not a name I recognized, but so many plot points sent me rushing to Google to discern fact from fiction—and to learn more about the real historical events underpinning the story. The full-cast recording includes Edoardo Ballerini, Gary Farmer, Marin Ireland, Cassandra Campbell, MacLeod Andrews, and more. 11 hrs 30 mins. More info →

The Final Revival of Opal & Nev

The Final Revival of Opal & Nev

Author: Dawnie Walton
Black female power and creative freedom take center stage in this vividly imagined oral history. Fierce and fashionable Afro-punk singer Opal Jewel and ambitious British musician Nev Charles made a stunning addition to the 1970s music scene. Looking to make it big, the hit interracial duo reluctantly opened for a popular Southern band, and before the infamous concert was over, relationships were irredeemably broken, a man was dead, and a photographer captured an unforgettable flashpoint moment. But what really happened? Decades later, a journalist with a personal stake in the outcome sets out to uncover the answer. The resulting journalistic interviews are so convincing I had to make sure Opal & Nev exist only on the page. This rock-umentary style story is superb on audio, especially when narrated by a full cast including favorites like Janina Edwards, Bahni Turpin, and Gabra Zackman. It took me an hour to adjust to the format, but when I did: WOW. Heads up for violence, racial slurs, and substance abuse. 13 hrs 17 mins. More info →

Hour of the Witch

Hour of the Witch

Author: Chris Bohjalian
Chilling and propulsive, this Puritan-era historical thriller transports you to 1662 Boston, where accusations fly and “it was always possible that the Devil was present.” Desperate to escape her abusive husband, Mary Deerfield seeks a rare divorce from the town council—but it’s a precarious time to pursue independence as a woman. Mary is soon accused of far worse than being a rebellious wife, and realizes a separation from her husband won’t be enough to save her from his escalating cruelty. Relying on a large cast of well-developed characters and an intricate plot, Bohjalian skillfully ratchets up the tension all the way through the exceptional ending. The Puritan era feels immediate and its struggles all too timely in this urgent historical novel set in 1660s Boston. Fabulous on audio, as narrated by Grace Experience, Saskia Maarleveld, Danny Campbell, Cassandra Campbell, and more. 14 hrs 8 mins. More info →

No Two Persons

No Two Persons

“No two persons ever read the same book, or saw the same picture.” These words frame the story for Bauermeister’s 2023 novel in linked short stories (and Minimalist Summer Reading Guide pick) about how a debut novel changes the lives of eleven people. First we meet Alice, an aspiring writer who struggles for years before finally completing her novel Theo. Then we meet the publisher’s assistant who plucks it from the slush pile, the out-of-work actor chosen to narrate the audiobook (perhaps my favorite story), the teenager who finds the book while she hides her homelessness, and more readers who subsequently stumble upon it at just the right time. A testament to the invisible threads that tie us together, and the power of books and reading. Narrated by Barrie Kreinik, Braden Wright, Carol Jacobanis, Cassandra Campbell, Gabra Zackman, George Newbern, Jesse Vilinsky, and more. 8 hrs 54 mins. More info →

The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece

The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece

Author: Tom Hanks
As the title suggests, this enjoyable novel is about the making of a contemporary blockbuster superhero movie, based on a 1970 comic depicting a soldier's experience in WWII. Hanks is clearly writing what he knows here, including lots of juicy details about everything from location scouting to casting concerns to dealing with on-set drama. I especially enjoyed the character backstories that revealed how each cast and crew member got into the business in the first place. The tone is undeniably earnest, but that worked just fine for me. While the print novel contains illustrations of the comic, I would highly recommend the audiobook, read by a full cast including Peter Gerety, Natalie Morales, Rita Wilson, and, of course, Tom Hanks. 15 hrs 57 mins. How High We Go in the Dark

How High We Go in the Dark

Set in 2030, this debut climate fiction appeared on multiple award lists, including the inaugural Waterstones Debut Fiction Prize shortlist and the inaugural Ursula K. Le Guin Prize shortlist. The story follows scientists in Siberia who discover the preserved remains of a girl who appears to have died of an ancient virus—a virus that turns out to be highly contagious once thawed, unleashing a global Arctic Plague. From there, the story explores the way we respond and adapt to tragedy, as well as the impact on our planet. As some cities and states fall underwater, other areas build funerary skyscrapers and euthanasia amusement parks. Scientists try to create artificial organs for transplant, while others look for a new planet. It is as much about these changes as it is about what ties and connects our humanity to each other. The full cast includes Julia Whelan, Brian Nishii, Keisuke Hoashi, MacLeod Andrews, Jeanne Sakata, and more. 9 hrs 20 mins. More info →

Florence Adler Swims Forever

Florence Adler Swims Forever

Author: Rachel Beanland
This book is NOT what I expected: it's no spoiler to say that on page 14 the vivacious 20-year-old swimmer Florence drowns on a training swim in the Atlantic Ocean, and the book is truly about her Jewish family's elaborate attempt to conceal the truth from Florence's hospitalized sister, who they fear will go into premature labor if she learns of the tragedy. Beanland explains in her author's note that much of the story is based on her own Jewish family's history in 1930s Atlantic City, and teases out what is fact and what is fiction for her readers. I loved this on audio, narrated by a full cast including Jesse Vilinsky and Gabra Zackman. 10 hrs 48 mins. More info →

Trust

Trust

Author: Hernan Diaz
This multi-layered story is told in four distinct parts, each one subtly—or, in the case of the final section, not so subtly—changing the meaning of what came before, and each with its own narrator. Part I is a biographical novel based on the life of an infamous Wall Street trader. Part II, an unfinished draft of the autobiography the trader began writing, with the help of a ghostwriter, to "correct" the novel's portrayal of his life. Part III is from the point of view of that ghostwriter, and Part IV ... no spoilers, but it blows the lid off the whole thing. Structure nerds like myself will find much to appreciate here. Narrated by Edoardo Ballerini, Jonathan Davis, Mozhan Marnò, and Orlagh Cassidy; 10 hrs 21 mins. More info →

  1. Melanie Beisert says:

Both of the following books are probably meant for a middle school to high school audience, but I loved listening to them as an adult. (I am an English teacher in junior high.)

The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman is a full cast and unbelievably WONDERFUL!!!! I was mesmerized by both the plot and the dramatization!

Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli is narrated by the late John Ritter. The book itself is quirky and fun and oddly relatable, but the narration took me back to my childhood hearing John Ritter’s enchanting voice.

  2. Colleen says:

The Flower Sisters by Michelle Collins Anderson published 4/23/2024 has a full cast. Her first novel.

  3. Ginny says:

Taylor Jenkins Reid’s “The End of the Affair”—kind of a long short short story or novella. It’s epistolary, with four characters, and fun on audio.

  4. Gloria says:

Several on this list I’ve started but not finished, maybe I need to give the audio a try on them!

  5. Angie Flynn-McIver says:

“American Gods” by Neil Gaiman is one of my favorites. I’ve listened to it at least twice.

  6. Carol says:

When Stars Are Scattered by Victoria Jamieson & Omar Mohamed. Yup, the graphic novel for kids. Unforgettable! Be sure to listen to the author’s note at the end.

  7. Rawles says:

I am currently listening to None of this is True by Lisa Jewell- talk about a different structure and full cast! And a very unreliable narrator (I think). I recognize the actress reading Josie but can’t place her- thought it was from The Guest List (which got me into audiobooks) but not sure. Love this list, thank you!!!

    • Carolyn says:

This isn’t a full cast audio, but definitely feels like it with all the energy, reciting Shakespeare, and the amazing conversations. Shakespeare, The Man Who Pays the Rent. Conversations with Judi Dench and Brendan O’Hea. Absolutely love it.

  8. Jennifer says:

I struggle to pay attention when I listen to audiobooks, but I just listened to “With a Kiss We Die” which has a full cast and is done as a podcast. It was such a fun experience and I don’t think I would liked the book at all if I had read it in print. I’ve been looking for more audiobooks like this, so this was great timing!

  9. Julie says:

The Only Plane in the Sky by Garrett M. Graff, Blackout by Dhonielle Clayton, etc. (YA), and anything by Lucy Foley.

  10. Kaye says:

Florence Pugh and others reading Jane Austen’s Persuasion is one I have listened to several times. Thanks for the other suggestions too!

  11. Dylan says:

OMG, did you know somehow that it’s my birthday today and that I LOVE full-cast audiobooks?! Happy Birthday to me! So many added to my list. And I strongly underline Daisy Jones and the Six. Perfection.
    Thank you, MMD!

  12. Mary says:

The audio of Meet Me at the Museum, an epistolary novel by Anne Youngson, was beautifully read by Helen Lloyd and Lars Knutson, a full cast of two.
Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White, narrated by Meryl Streep and a full cast for the voices of the animals and humans is charming.

  13. Dana Carr says:

Run Rose Run by James Patterson is DELIGHTFUL! I mean, what could be better than Dolly Parton basically narrating herself?!

  14. Dolores Jackson says:

One of all time faves on audio is The Bone Clocks by David Mitchell. Full cast of amazing voice acting and such a unique story. I had never read Mitchell’s work before this and it made me a fan.

  15. Wendy Barker says:

BBC did a full cast recording of The Hobbit in 1968 and it was released as an audiobook in 2007. Long before audiobooks became a thing BBC was doing radio plays of classic works. I loved it.

  16. Adrienne says:

Loved Daisy Jones and the Six and Sleeping Giants on audio. Both were amazing! I’d also add Remarkably Bright Creatures to the list simply because the person who narrated Marcellus the octopus was perfect!

  17. Donna M Peterson says:

My Father’s House (Joseph O’Connor) is a wonderful audiobook with a large cast.

  18. Michelle Collazo says:

One of my absolute favorites on audio is ‘The Collected Stories of Winnie-the-Pooh’ by A.A. Milne. The full cast dramatization is read by Stephen Fry, Dame Judi Dench, Michael Williams, Geoffrey Palmer, and Jane Horrocks. I have listened to this so many times. So many. Such a delight. Of course, the stories are so much fun to read aloud, and I did read them to my littlest one several years ago, but I loved hearing these actors offer their version, with their energy, wit, and timing that bring the adventures to life. Complete with sweet little piano segues scattered throughout. Highly recommend for all ages. Eeyore might be my favorite… 🙂

  19. Kelsey says:

“Casanova LLC” by Julia Whalen. It’s her loose follow up to “Thank You For Listening”. Julia Whalen, Sebastian York, and Eduardo Ballerini are the main 3 in the cast but there are others. It’s exclusive to her new app, Audiobrary, but it is 100% worth the purchase, especially when you get the version that comes with all the interviews and bonus content!! (This is coming from someone who predominantly uses the library and rarely ever buys books for myself).

  20. Amy says:

I’m not the biggest Neil Gaiman fan, but the BBC Radio full-cast reading of his Neverland is outstanding. James McAvoy, Benedict Cumberbatch, Natalie Dormer, Christopher Lee, Sophie Okonedo, and more.

  21. Paula says:

I loved Guernsey in print but it was an absolute delight on audio!!! Even if you’ve read it, it’s worth a listen.

  22. Leslie says:

I highly recommend ELEANOR & PARK by Rainbow Rowell If you’re a fan of YA books, or just want a story with sweet characters who will stay with you for a very long time. Narrated by Rebecca Lowman and Sunil Malhotra.

  23. Diand says:

The full cast version of Good Omens is so good! Although it might only be available on Audible…

  24. Jo-Anne Guimond says:

Audible recently released a newly recorded version of Anne of Green Gables, directed by Sandra Oh, with voices by the likes of Catherine O’Hara and Victor Garber. It was SO fun to rediscover this classic in this format. It was like listening to an old time radio play. Pure delight!

  25. Amy says:

The audiobook of Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi is absolutely brilliant. The different voices of each character adds so much to the story.
