It’s more than a book club

Readers, I’m excited for the days of reading on the front porch with Daisy at my feet and a cold Spindrift in my hand. And then discussing all things books and reading with you in Book Club!

We’re kicking off the summer season on Thursday, May 19 with our Summer Reading Guide Unboxing, and that’s just the beginning of an incredible summer full of author chats, new classes, small group discussions, and ALL the book recommendations.

All this happens in the MMD Book Club community, where we delight in every season of reading.

If you’re in need of escape, community, or bookish joy, the Modern Mrs. Darcy Book Club is the place for you.

Our one-of-a-kind community is more than a book club, and it’s filled with kindred spirits who love talking all things books and reading. We read and discuss a monthly selection together, but that’s just the beginning of what we do. We also provide special events and content and host regular classes that help us get more out of our reading lives.

When you join, you also get instant access to our full library of past classes and author chats, including perennial favorites like Book Journaling for Book Lovers, How to Read a Classic, and One Hour to a Better #Bookstagram.

The Summer Reading Guide Unboxing

The best book party on the interwebs is right around the corner! We host an “Unboxing” event for our Modern Mrs Darcy Book Club members and What Should I Read Next Patreon community members and we look forward to it every year.

In a ninety-minute live session, I reveal every title in the guide, and tell readers why I chose it. Our conversation is casual and unscripted, filled with real talk about great books, in the presence of people who love books and reading.

Unboxing is a DELIGHT. We do it twice so more readers can attend live: at 1 and 8 pm Eastern time on Thursday, May 19. Our members get the guide in their inboxes just after Unboxing—which means they get it four days early.

Our members also get an expanded guide with more book recs from the team you will come to know and love, if you don’t already. If you’ve ever considered becoming a member, now is an excellent time to jump in.

We’re learning to read better, together

This year we’ve dug into the benefits of re-reading, mapped the hallmarks of a great book project, and done several genre deep dives. Our classes and sessions are recorded and available for you to watch anytime with your membership.

This summer, we’ll continue learning how to get more out of our reading lives with brand new classes and events. We’ll talk with incredible authors Bethany Morrow, Mary Laura Philpott, Bonnie Garmus, and Peng Shepherd about their books, their research and writing experiences, and (of course) what they love to read.

Our Summer Book Club selections

JUNE:

Bomb Shelter: Love, Time, and Other Explosives by Mary Laura Philpott. Among the finest—perhaps THE finest—memoir-in-essays I’ve ever read. This intimate look at family life is like sitting down with a trusted friend to talk about what matters most in life.

JULY:

Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus. A life-affirming tale of a chemist ahead of her time, a life-changing love affair, a dog with a huge vocabulary, and the combustible combination of chemistry, cooking, and afternoon television.

AUGUST:

The Cartographers by Peng Shepherd. A page-turning literary mystery with a dynamite premise and a little bit of magic. We’re also continuing our “Austen in August” tradition with Sense and Sensibility.

Do you (or a friend) have a graduation or summer birthday coming up? We’ve got gift memberships, too. A membership for yourself or a reading friend would make a wonderful birthday, graduation, or just because gift.

I can’t wait to read with you this season. Happy reading, friends!

We appreciate a good conversation in the comments section. Whether we’re talking about books or life, differing opinions can enrich a discussion when they’re offered for the purpose of greater connection and deeper understanding, which we whole-heartedly support. We have begun holding all comments for moderation and manually approving them (learn more). My team and I will not approve comments that are hurtful or intended to shame members of this community, particularly if they are left by first-time commenters. We have zero tolerance for hate speech or bigotry of any kind. Remember that there are real people on the other side of the screen. We’re grateful our community of readers is characterized by kindness, curiosity, and thoughtfulness. Thank you for helping us keep it that way.
