My favorite finds from around the web:
• 16 overall best books of 2016, from Brain Pickings.
• What house guests REALLY notice when they visit. “It’s not about whether or not your baseboards are clean, or if fresh flowers adorn every table surface. There’s really only a short list of things that really truly make a difference to your guests.”
• 10 things you didn’t know about how the New York Times Book Review works. “A few things you may or may not have known about how books are assigned, reviewed, and considered for the year-end lists of the paper of record.”
• How to conduct an annual review. “I absolutely love this process. It is so much fun to pull out my trusty notebook, look at my goals for the year, see what was important to me 12 months ago, what I accomplished according to plan, and what went right and wrong.”

Brand new: the 2017 MMD Reading Challenge. This year’s challenge is choose-your-own-adventure style, so you can get more out of your reading life in 2017.
One year ago: What worked for me in 2015. “I love to do a little bit of reflection at year’s end, but I don’t make it complicated. Around my house we use two questions to help us take stock of the year gone by.”
Two years ago: The best book you’ve never heard of on … getting over it. “Everyone’s experienced loss, and it doesn’t always look like you expect. This book helps you understand and accept your own losses, instead of minimizing them. (A crucial distinction.)”
Three years ago: 9+ family Christmas movies that won’t terrify your kids. “Here are the movies we can enjoy together–without tears or nightmares.”
Four years ago: Books I abandoned in 2012. “When I give up on a book, it’s usually because either: 1. The book is truly terrible, or 2. The timing is wrong.”
Five years ago: The minimalist’s guide to stocking stuffers.
Have a great weekend!

Thanks for this list! I have now bookmarked Brain Pickings. What a great website, and now I have added several more books to my TBR list!! I am especially looking forward to Time Travel and Hidden Figures.
Thanks for the Brain Pickings list! I requested that our public library buy a couple of these that they don’t have already!!
Thanks so much for the shoutout! JT
Anne, have you actually done the annual review? It looks like it takes up a lot of head-space, but I can see going into the next year, it might be a good overview.
