- Pride and Prejudice. Which film version is best? I have been running a Pride and Prejudice marathon at my house. The 1995 5-hour BBC version featuring Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle was the first I ever saw, and I think it’s quite good. But the 2005 Keira Knightley/Matthew MacFayden version enlivens the characters a bit more, which I enjoy, even if the story is pared down to a mere two hours. I have particularly enjoyed reading the companion book that came with the Pride and Prejudice: 10th Anniversary Limited Collector’s EditionI borrowed from my mom. Colin Firth turned down the role the first time! He didn’t think he could live up to Jane Austen’s Darcy. Which P&P version is your favorite?
- More Pride and Prejudice. If you’re a fan, this video is a lot of fun.
- Now that I’ve watched five hours of Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle, I am ready to see The King’s Speech. Any other Oscar movies worth watching this year? I’m particularly interested in your opinion of Winter’s Bone. I’ve heard it trumpeted as a powerful redemption story, but I’m not generally into anything lab eled “gritty.” Opinions?
- We went to a wedding over the weekend, smack dab in the middle of my Pride and Prejudice marathon. We’ve been to a lot of weddings, but to my knowledge none where the bride and groom had courted. Not dated. Old-fashioned courtship. As in, “If you want to get to know me, you can ask my father’s permission. Sandwiched in between Jennifer Ehle and Keira Knightley, this seemed entirely appropriate. And the couple seems really happy.
- I won something! (I never win anything if luck is involved: bingo, door prizes, nothing.) But I won this cool little book over at Money Saving Mom, and FedEx brought it today. I am looking forward to reading it, but I’ve already read the ending, and Tsh (yes, that’s right–it’s pronounced “Tish”) has already won me over with her organizational templates in the appendix.
- Do you eat raw cookie dough? Or do you let your kids taste it? Marion Nestle thoroughly freaked me out about salmonella and I now exercise restraint. Which is why I was thrilled to discover the best-ever safe substitute for raw chocolate chip cookie dough….(drumroll please). Just put it on a spoon. Fantastic.
- Our city is on tenterhooks waiting for Trader Joe’s to finalize a lease here in town. Seriously, a hefty contingent is desperate to secure our Trader Joe’s so we can stop making the two-hour pilgrimage to more highly favored neighboring cities to get our TJ’s goods. Please, no gloating if your town already has one. But surely we aren’t the only ones who think we’d thoroughly enjoy a local Trader Joe’s?

Mrs. Darcy, are you by chance in Louisville? We are trying to secure a Trader Joe’s here, which is why I ask.
I was trying to find a contact form or email, but finding neither, I assume you’d like to remain hard to reach. This is, of course, your right and I am quite pleased to respect it. I just hope you don’t mind such a personal question on a comment to your post.

Yes, I am! Are you a Trader Joe’s fan too?
I’m not trying to be invisible–thanks for reminding me that I still haven’t added my contact page! My email is modernmrsdarcy at gmail dot com.
I just love Jane Austen. Believe it or not.. I have yet to see the Colin Firth version of Pride and Prejudice. I’ll have to get my husband to get it for me. Sadly, only two of my four daughter will share my passion (one because she’s four and doesn’t know any better lol!) I did enjoy Keira Knightley’s performance.. I’ll compare when I’ve seen both.
Blessings!
Anne.. do you know there’s a movie from 1940 (Greer Carson and Lawrence Olivier)and BBC mini-series 1952, 1967 and 1980 as well. Check out this review:

I’ve seen snippets of 1940 and 1980, but not a snitch of ’52 or ’67. Greer Carson makes me think I’m watching Gone With the Wind, and the 1980 studio version is really hard to watch if you’re used to film versions. But Colin Firth raved about Olivier’s performance, which makes me think I need to sit through the whole thing one of these days. Have you seen any of the older ones?
