Happy early weekend! We’re rolling out Links a day early because of tomorrow’s holiday here in the U.S., although our Bogel family plans are decidedly low-key. We’re planning on hanging out, grilling, and making peach ice cream, and I know Will has big plans to watch the Tour de France. (I’m sure I’ll catch a little but good gracious it’s nerve-racking!)
I hope you have something to look forward to these next few days, and that this collection of interesting reads and favorite things helps ease you into that weekend frame of mind.
My favorite finds from around the web:
I offer gift links for articles whenever possible (you may still need to create an account with the publication); if there’s no gift link and you’re not a subscriber, check to see if your library carries the publication or use a bookmarking service.
Daisy Edgar-Jones to Star in New ‘Sense and Sensibility’ Film Adaptation. (Hollywood Reporter) It’s going to be tough to top the Emma Thompson/Kate Winslet version.
15 4th of July Desserts That’ll Steal the Show This Holiday. (Real Simple) These look so good.
Jane Austen’s Boldest Novel Is Also Her Least Understood. (New York Times gift link) Lauren Groff on Mansfield Park. We’re reading this together in MMD Book Club for Austen in August this year!
That Dropped Call With Customer Service? It Was on Purpose. (Atlantic gift link) “People spoke of not just the money lost but the hours, the sanity, the basic sense that sense can prevail. Taken separately, these hassles and indignities were funny anecdotes. Together, they suggested something unreckoned with.”
The trailer for Project Hail Mary is here! (YouTube)
Marginalia mania: how ‘annotating’ books went from big no-no to BookTok’s next trend. (The Guardian) MMD Book Club had a class about marginalia way back in 2019. Maybe we’re the trendsetters!
My favorite new floral sheets are back on the Anthro site! I bought these a few months ago and they are my favorite thing—just so riotously happy. I paid full price and regret nothing (especially because they sold out in a snap). But some happy styles are discounted at the moment, including these lemon ones that are currently on a great sale.
The Book Cover Trend You’re Seeing Everywhere. (New York Times gift link) “Take a genteel painting, maybe featuring a swooning woman. Add iridescent neon type for a shock to the system. And thank (or blame) Ottessa Moshfegh for getting there early.”
I made this Slow-Cooker BBQ Pulled Chicken (NYT Cooking gift link) for an easy weeknight dinner last night and it was a big hit! We’ll be making it again soon. I used Trader Joe’s Sriracha & Roasted Garlic BBQ Sauce.
Taste Is the New Intelligence. (Wild Bare Thoughts) “Curation is care. It says: I thought about this. I chose it. I didn’t just repost it. I didn’t just regurgitate the trending take. I took the time to decide what was worth passing on. That’s rare now. And because it’s rare, it’s valuable.”
Which Hot Dog Brand Is Best? A Blind Taste Test of Oscar Mayer, Hebrew National, and More. (Bon Appétit) Do you agree with their findings?
You sound like ChatGPT. (The Verge) “But it’s not just that we’re adopting AI language — it’s about how we’re starting to sound. Even though current studies mostly focus on vocabulary, researchers suspect that AI influence is starting to show up in tone, too — in the form of longer, more structured speech and muted emotional expression.”
Ready Or Not, ’80s Makeup Is Making A Maximalist Comeback. (Bustle) I never thought I’d see the day.
The Sharpie Story: Inside a brand so strong that Starbucks is now depending on it. (Fast Company) “‘You can trust a Sharpie to do exactly what it says it’ll do, without trying to wow you with any special effects,’ she says, distilling its appeal into three words: ‘Consistent, definitive, indelible.'”
Don’t miss these posts:
20 heart-pounding heist novels. Whether you’re in need of a page-turner or looking to bust out of a reading slump, these heist novels fit the bill.
My go-to products for my current minimalist summer makeup routine. The products I find myself consistently reaching for when I want to spend five minutes or less.
Head to summer camp with these 7 novels. A variety of vicarious summer camp adventures.
Have a great weekend!

Speaking of Mansfield Park, i wonder if you or the Community here has ever heard of the Jane Austen „Sequels“ by Joan Aiken ? For example „Mansfield revisited“ , published in 1984.

The trailer! Amaze! 🙂
You are definitely one of my north stars 🐎
I LOVED “Project Hail Mary,” so I’m a little bit nervous about seeing the movie. 90% of the trailer seems to be based on the first 10% of the book, but I do think Ryan Gosling seems really right for the part.
The latest Claudia Gray mystery, “The Rushworth Family Plot,” ties up all the loose ends of “Mansfield Park” very nicely. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I bought those beautiful sheets from Anthro when you posted them before – I love them so much!
The article about “sludge” is definitely disheartening, but also confirms the horrors we’ve through on the phone are REAL!!! It was shocking! What kind of a world are we living in? It means that we should hesitate to even buy anything, or pay for any “subscription” or service, because we are NOT going to get customer support, or satisfaction, or help, or our money back….but we’re in a bind, because we want or need these things. “What a bunch of crooks” my husband always says, and it’s true. Right now I need help with a new Hp printer I just bought that is not working, but there is NO phone number to call on the manual, and the Chatbot is useless and the possible buttons to push for my problem do NOT address my issue.
Oh Suzy, I truly feel your pain. My husband and I just discarded our HP printer yesterday. We were exhausted from the relentless problems and the total lack of customer care. We marched over to Best Buy and bought a Canon printer instead. Then we turned in the HP printer for recycling. And, best of all, we signed up for Geek Squad again (we had let our membership expire). Now THERE is great customer service, well worth the membership fee. I wish you luck with your HP printer, but honestly? I would recommend returning it.
The “Taste is the new intelligence” article was so thought provoking. You definitely do a great job of curating your taste with your Links I love posts. I look forward to them every week. I am trying out Glasp to collect all the things I love across the internet and I added the Taste article to it. I remember you mentioning you were looking for an alternative to Pocket and Glasp might be worth looking at for this purpose. Happy 4th!
The article on customer service had me laughing. At least I have a word to describe what I often experience!
Happy Weekend, MMD team. Just a plug for the audiobook of “Black Woods, Blue Sky” by Eowyn Ivey. I loved this book so much. Beautiful storytelling, character development and magic.
I completely agree with the hot dog tasters’ choice for number one. Those are the hot dogs I bought for my 4th of July lunch. I would’ve ordered the other competitors differently, though, especially disagreeing with #10.
Thanks for the link to a very readable article!
