My go-to outfit for chilly days (and a giveaway)

My go-to outfit for chilly days (and a giveaway)

This post is sponsored by thredUP

Chilly days are here again: sweater weather has finally arrived in the Upper South. I’ve been so looking forward to the change of seasons, and was more than ready to pull my own cool-weather clothing out of storage. But when I went to retrieve them, they were nowhere to be found!

I finally figured out what happened. My family moved earlier this year. When we unpacked nine months ago, I took that opportunity to carefully cull my already minimalist-leaning wardrobe, only unpacking clothes I truly loved and wanted to wear, and that were in good condition.

It hasn’t been truly cold since we moved—until now, when the gaps in my closet are suddenly obvious, and the box holding my favorite winter scarves is still AWOL from the move.

To quickly patch the holes in my wardrobe without spending a fortune, I turned to thredUP, the largest online thrift store where millions of women refresh their closets. They make secondhand shopping convenient and fun, carrying on trend, like-new fashion (sometimes brand new with tags!) from top name brands and designers for up to 90% off. (Plus I have a coupon code for you that get you an even better deal on your first purchase—and a giveaway for one lucky reader!)

I love getting a great deal, but I don’t often shop secondhand in person. I have friends who enjoy the thrill of the hunt—who love to dig through racks of clothing to find a hidden gem at a killer discount. That’s not me. Thankfully, thredUP combines the value of secondhand fashion with the ease of online shopping: I search for my favorite brands—J.Crew, Madewell, Banana Republic, The Gap—and filter by size, color, price, and style to easily find what I’m looking for.

When it’s cool but not cold, my go-to outfit looks like jeans + neutral sweater + a great third piece, and on a cool fall or winter day that’s likely to be a scarf. It’s incredible how adding a scarf to a basic sweater and jeans elevates an ensemble from purely functional to a legitimate outfit. I will be wearing some variation of this outfit—denim, sweater, scarf—three days a week this season, because it’s easy and it looks good. I like to look good, and I really value easy.

Scarves are easy and fun to buy secondhand—the price is right and the fit is guaranteed. I filled my thredUP cart with cute, fun scarves that I could easily add to my neutral basics to complete a great fall outfit, and thredUP’s selection was fantastic. I found a black and white, new with tags Modcloth blanket scarf for $9.99 (instead of $30 new), an adorable pink Banana Republic scarf with pompoms for $14.99 (instead of $48), a grey fringed Banana scarf for $6.99 (instead of $35), a blue plaid Gap scarf for $9.99 (instead of $30), and a yellow plaid blanket scarf for $7.99 (instead of $24).

I appreciate how thredUP triple inspects each item by hand to ensure everything is like-new (or even brand new with tags!), and arrives neatly packaged and folded. Shipping is free on qualified orders and returns are easy.

When I shop thredUP, I always check to see what they have from my favorite brands. That’s how I stumbled upon a great pair of Madewell jeans in my size for only $26.99. I’m a new convert to Madewell denim: they make fabulous jeans, but they’re not cheap, so I was psyched to get these for significantly less than the $119 retail price.

I found more great pieces for daily wear while I was browsing— like a cute Madewell cardigan for just $42.99 (instead of $149 new), and a J.Crew crewneck sweater—the kind I’ve paid full price for in the past—for $20.99 (instead of $98 new).

I always check for shoes from my favorite brands while I’m browsing thredUP, which is how I stumbled upon these gorgeous J.Crew ankle boots. When they arrived the soles were pristine—I don’t think they’ve ever been worn. And instead of the hefty $228 price tag I’ve seen online, I picked these up for $67.99.

I wear a size 11—which is rare, and hard to find secondhand. I’ve learned that if I’m looking for a certain size or color from my favorite brands, it’s worth checking back regularly—thredUP gets new inventory in all the time.

When I’m shopping thredUP, I have a pretty good idea of what I’m looking for, but I’m also open to serendipity. I’ll check out what my favorite brands have on offer, just to see what’s there. (In practical terms, this means I’ll sort by size, but not necessarily by item.) Sometimes it pays off big.

That’s how I found this gorgeous J. Crew cocktail dress, which will be perfect for holiday party season.

This beauty came new with tags, for just $47.99 (instead of $250 retail).

Want to try it yourself? thredUP is offering Modern Mrs. Darcy readers a special discount! The first 100 people to use my code ANNE40 will get an extra 40% off their first order. (Applies to new U.S. customers only. Redeemable online only. Certain restrictions apply.)

I need some color. I realized that, of my dozen or so sweaters, 3 of them are grey cardigans! Neutrals are easy, but I think I need to spice up my world of navy, black, and grey.

  2. Heather says:

This year I really need a new winter coat and some black boots. I haven’t bought myself a new coat in years! (like over 8 years….) and I never had black boots, only brown ones that I have nearly worn the soles off! Awesome giveaway!!

  3. Katie B says:

I’m loving all the scarves (they are part of my fall/winter/let’s be real, all year “mom uniform” too). Thanks for the chance to win!

  4. Lori M says:

What a great idea to buy scarves from ThredUp. No fit issues with scarves! Your tips here make me want to try it again, too. Makes sense to look for brands/items I already know will fit.

My favorite winter item is also SCARVES. Luckily I have a long neck so they work well for me. I’ve learned to wear a necklace underneath, just in case it gets too warm with the scarf on (often happens in my office). I also love the Lush Tunics – which are currently on sale at Nordstrom. I have them in 4 different colors. You can wear as a tunic or tucked in and probably in at least 3 seasons. And they’re great with scarves! I wear them all winter with leggings and boots.

  5. Chrissie says:

I’m on the hunt for some new jeans and sweaters, so this would be perfect! Loving the striped pullover sweater I saw from J. Crew, new with tags.

  6. Amy says:

I’m like you — scarves, always! I can never resist a good scarf because it goes with cold weather as much as books, cats and hot tea. Can’t wait to try ThreadUp!

p.s. I love it when you take pictures in your awesome library.

  7. Amy D says:

I love thredUP! Like you, shopping through racks and racks of clothes is not my thing. Trying to buy off-the-rack (what I can afford) for my not-off-the-rack body is usually an exercise in frustration. I love being able to shop thredUP with everything filtered by size or my favorite brands that work best for my body. $250 would go a long, long way!!

  8. Brooke says:

I am in love with all the cute flannels for fall — dress them up or dress them down — I am picking up a few of these!

  9. Jennifer N. says:

I’ve used Thred-UP a few times with mixed results (I’ve learned black items can be hard because the pictures aren’t fantastic, but I got a silk J. Crew bridesmaid’s dress in the perfect color of purple on clearance for way less than retail); I still love the idea of repurposing other peoples’ unwanted clothing. I, too, love all things J. Crew and this adorable athletic-style sweater with cute front pockets could find a home in my wardrobe:

  10. Janice says:

I’ve been tempted to check out ThreadUP for awhile because I keep hearing about it. Thanks to your coupon code and this post, I finally took the time to do it! IT. IS. AMAZING. Truly! I have had my eye on the Nine West Turtleneck Sweater but at almost $100, I could not ever splurge. It’s on ThreadUP for $26.99!! Thanks Anne! 😀

  11. Oh! My! Gosh! Such great prices! Such great quality! I will definitely be using this site for all my clothing needs from now on! Since its freezing here in Virginia, I started thinking about the warmer months, (it gives me something to look forward to. :), and I saw this beautiful blouse! Gorgeous! It would look lovely under jeans!
Or this Adrianna Papell coctail dress is an absolute wonder for parties or even to Christmas Eve mass! Such a pretty color!

Thank you so much for sharing this, Anne! I will be using this site for all my clothing needs from now on!

  12. Erin Guin says:

I had a hard time choosing, but I love J. Crew’s classic sweaters. I’d wear pretty much any of their tops. I also love the silver flats available right now.

  13. Bethany Hudson says:

I LOVE ThredUp! My favorite winter wardrobe item this season is definitely my JCrew ankle boots (from ThredUp), which I could never have afforded retail.

  14. Hillary says:

I tried ThredUp a while back, but this post was a good reminder to give it a go for things I haven’t had luck selling- thanks! For winter, I’m all into high-quality leather boots. The ones in your picture are INCREDIBLE 🙂

  15. Sharlee says:

I’m expecting a baby in a few weeks so my winter wardrobe will be something that is flattering and nursing-friendly. I’m thinking loose sweaters (found several contenders on the site) with a nursing tank underneath.

  16. Libby Miner says:

We had our first hard frost this morning (late by Maine standards!), but this past week with the temperatures finally feeling more wintry, I’ve started wearing my vests, laying them over two knit tops. I have many colors so I can match them with a top or pants. Today its a turquoise shirt under a gray strip hoodie with a fleecy turquoise vest
over all with jeans. Sometimes I add a scarf to keep toasty on a chilly morning.

  17. Michelle Dunbar says:

I Love ThredUP! I’ve shopped with them many times and have always had a great experience. I currently have a search for Calvin Klein dresses saved so I can get notifications of new arrivals. Looking for the perfect new dress for the holidays!

  18. Jane K says:

I appreciate your endorsement for threadUp, a site I’ve been planning to shop for months, but haven’t gotten around to yet. Living on a retirement budget but still desiring to look somewhat fashion-current, makes resale a great solution. May I addd, finding quality clothes that flatter the septuagenarian physique isn’t easy. (Nothin’ sadder than an old bottom in leggings.) Love your podcasts, Anne. Keep ‘me coming!

  19. Whitney Conard says:

I LOVE Thred Up, partly because I am also a big Madewell fan. One trick I have found is that you can save a search – I.e. Madewell shirt in size small – and they will email you when those items are added to inventory. Certain brands are snapped up quickly so this saves me searching those items. And they get new stuff added all the time! I’m looking for a pair of tall leather black boots and thred up has several I’m eyeing!

  20. Judy says:

I’m with you on ThredUp. Clothes (and shoes) arrive clean, tidy, and well wrapped in excellent condition. That and you can’t beat the prices! What more could I ask from the comfort of shopping from my living room?

  21. Kerri Thorn says:

I love a good tunic-length cozy sweater. When my go-to wore out last winter, I found a great replacement at JC Penney’s, of all places.

  22. Jody says:

Sweaters! I’m trying to fill my drawers with neutral sweaters that will last many seasons, so ThreadUp is a fantastic option!

  23. Heather says:

I absolutely love Theedup and it is my favorite place to purchase great finds! I would love a cute pea coat in a fun color for winter.

  24. Jennifer Rittall says:

I need winter clothes in the worst way. I recently moved back home to GA from FL and realized my winter wardrobe is severely lacking. Jeans and sweaters are my go to every day!

  25. Marla Jensen says:

I haven’t checked out thread up since having my baby. I totally could get sucked in to the non maternity clothes! I’m especially loving the puffy vests in pink and turquoise colors.

  26. Phaedra says:

Cardigans in various weights are what get me through most of fall winter spring in the PNW and I can always wear them to work making them an all around win. I love ThredUp. Have found great things for my tween, as well. thanks for the chance to win!

  27. Thanks for letting us know about this site. The first thing I saw was the “Thrift Pink for Good.” A good friend was just diagnosed with breast cancer, so my family is doing whatever we can to support her and breast cancer research. I’m happy this site has something like that, and all the other amazing clothes and accessories.

  28. Margaret Bensuaski says:

Will browse more later, and will be choosing light-weight layers and lots of accessories for the Las Vegas area. Thank you for the easy introduction to this the Thread up site!

  29. Connie says:

Oh my gosh, I love this site! I’d never heard of it before. I could shop for hours.
Love the scarfs and sweaters – just in time for winter months. What I could do with a $250 shopping spree….. 🙂 Thanks for sharing Anne.

  30. Jacelyn McGowan says:

I’d love to finally get a decent cashmere sweater! I could also use some comfortable but polished tops to wear on a daily basis. Thanks!

  31. Abbey says:

My current winter obsession is the leather leggings look! (Though, I’m pretty sure if I got a pair, it would be more of a Ross Gellar/New Year’s Resolutions/Leather Pants Incident kind of thing.) So I found a pair of vegan leather leggings at Banana Republic instead!
AND! I just used your discount at ThredUP and got a FANTASTIC deal on a cream, wool sweater from Anthropologie/Charlie & Robin to pair with the leggings. Got it for $28 (total!) instead $143! THANKS! 🙂

  32. Marinda Zaleski says:

Well since I live in arizona, I don’t need actual winter clothing. But I could do some with some new scarves or cardigans to have when the temps finally drop below the 80’s!

  33. Adie says:

I would LOVE a blanket scarf, like wearing your favorite throw in an acceptable way! Also, I could use a new pair of jeans, a colorful cardigan, and maybe a nice blouse.

  34. Kristen says:

I love puffy vests. I’ve been wearing vests for a decade and just can’t get away from them. I’m always looking for new ones to get me through fall and winter!

  35. Danielle says:

I would definitely pick up some ankle booties–I don’t own any yet and they’re not in the budget right now but I so want some!!

  36. Karen Jeanne says:

I found so many great things I couldn’t choose just one! I favorited a whole new winter wardrobe of neutral basics & bright red & green accents for the upcoming holiday season. For example, a nwt long sleeved black dress from Express, a red scarf & green belt from NY&Co. Or NY&Co straight leg jeans and a sparkly black formal top from The Limited, worn with cute red heels! Thanks for the giveaway!

  37. Heather White says:

I’m on the hunt for some new tops, specifically Bohemian style peasant tops. And also new ankle boots. Would love to shop ThreadUp!

  38. We’re Michigan transplants to East Texas and I’m still waiting for winter! But on those chillier days, I’m reaching in to my closet for a long, loose-knit Old Navy cardigan that goes on and off easily.

  39. Michele says:

I’ve been stalking the site for a good button down to wear under my cozy crewneck sweaters (also purchased from thredUP!). They’ve got great kids’ clothes, too — lots that either have tags still on or are like new, especially for the holidays coming up. And yay for those bonus finds!

  40. Michelle Owings-Christian says:

I need a winter coat. Most of the “coats” in the listing come to the waist. That’s not a coat. There were a couple of trench coats which were fine but the coat that caught my eye is the black Emporio Armani Wool Coat. Really pretty and looks like it would at least come down to my knees. I live in NJ and am always cold so I need a coat that at least comes to my knees.

  41. Kathie E. says:

I went browsing for a holiday dress/outfit. Nothing at the moment in my size that works, but I will keep checking back.

  42. Jennifer says:

I’m loving that I can search for wool sweaters specifically. I’d use it for some of those fun clothes (red jeans!) that I can’t justify buying full price but would love to wear. Now if only I could search for 100% wool…no poly mixes!

  43. Kathy says:

What a great idea. I love the idea of shopping used, but I don’t have the patience or time to sort through stacks of clothing. Will definitely check this out. (I hope I win, too!)

  44. Diana says:

I LOVE ThredUp, I so dislike the idea of thrifting locally, because I’m a little lazy and dont’ want to put the time in. But online where I can search and filter…just what I need!

I always could use some more sweaters so one like this:

    or this:

  45. Jaimie Ramsey says:

I love ThredUp, and Anne, I think it might have been because of a post of yours that I tried them first!

In terms of items I need for my winter wardrobe– a few things I’d like to get when I have some spending money. Jeans, a red top for Christmas, and a neutral blazer. I’ve not actually owned a blazer before but I think it would dress up a lot of my more casual tops and be an extra layer so I can wear short sleeves longer!

  46. Lisa White says:

There are several satchel handbags I would have to choose from, and a plethora of scarves to brighten my winter wardrobe!

  47. Steph says:

i need some new Gianni Bini heels. Apparently they are tasty to my dog! Also, it just dawned on me…you live in Louisville? We just moved here and love it so far 🙂

  48. Mirlandra says:

Thank you so much! I love thrift store prices but my size is hard to find so I don’t bother often. Time is too precious to waste! But in one minute on ThreadUp I had found a top already – perfect size and color!
I think what I’m loving most for winter is my jeans. Boise is hot in the summer and I always miss jeans! They are my favorite to pull out in the fall. I’ve been wanting some nice neutral sweaters to go with – I’m pretty sure I will find some great ones on ThreadUp! Thank you SO much for sharing this! I always appreciate having a trusted source suggest something that will change my life this much! Heck – they even have maternity clothing! #forthewin

  49. Angela says:

I found a really cute purple Liz Claiborne blouse that would look great on me, if I do say so myself! There were also some cute necklaces I like!

    Thanks for the coupon code!

  50. Annette says:

I have had great experiences with Thred Up! Looking for a really nice pair of black jeans to go with my colorful sweaters.

  51. DeLyndia says:

Looking forward to wearing a new rust colored knit scarf. It’s so soft and warm! We haven’t had much of a fall here in Texas. Holding out for winter!

  52. Erin Lehman says:

There is a NWT Michael Kohrs scarf on there that is a STUNNER! Would love to bury my face in it! 🙂 Especially for more than 50% off!

  53. Nina says:

It’s gotten cold here, and I could use some nice sweaters to wrap around my 33 week pregnant belly! Also, maybe a pair of boots that I don’t have to bend over to lace. : D

  54. Betsy says:

I could use some new sweaters/tops for work this winter. I, too, culled my winter wardrobe at the end of the season, and I could use some replacements.

  55. Anissa says:

I would love some chocolate brown boots. I have black and a lighter brown so these are a pure want not a need, but found some tempting prices!

  56. Carissa says:

In Wyoming dressing warm is a must. My down coat, a cozy scarf and tall boots are my go to for staying warm. I’m also looking forward to a poncho that is coming soon! 🙂

  57. Kristen says:

So many things I love and want. I need a new winter jacket and a pair of jeans, but I want the heart covered Ann Taylor sweater.

  58. Sarah Cline says:

I love being able to wear tights with my skirts as the weather cools down. It takes a while for that to happen here in Phoenix. It was 85 today, but I was tired of waiting and wore my first tights of the season.

  59. Heather says:

I LOVE thredUP! I just discovered them recently and for someone who needs to look professional at work and stay on a budget, this has been so helpful. This season, I am especially loving sweaters. (Although in a recent move, I also cannot find any of my scarves…)

  60. Laura Gaskill says:

I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, so “winter” here means chilly, foggy mornings and rainy days. I’m looking forward to wearing lots of cozy cardigans and boots!

  61. Melissa Bowers says:

I could definitely use a few loop/infinity scarves! I get frustrated that “regular” scarves never stay put how I want them, but even I can handle an infinity scarf. Your post has inspired me to play around with layers/”third pieces.”

  62. Courtney says:

I don’t normally buy Joie at full price but I love the selection on ThredUp! I’d love to pair the Joie casual dress with tights and a chunky sweater! 🙂

  63. Frances Robson says:

Thank you for mentioning ThredUp! I had not heard of it before. I went there and immediately found some things I had been hoping to find at my local thrift store. Sitting at home and shopping is so much easier! The item I had been looking for to complete my fall wardrobe was a pair of corduroy pants. Nothing like warm corduroy on chilly days!

  64. Kim says:

It never gets cold here, but winter brings a bit more breeze so I’d love to find some comfy leggings and lightweight cardigans to trick myself into believing it’s fall. 🙂

  65. Kirstjen says:

Definitely good jeans!! I love them and wear jeans year round but have trouble finding the perfect ones. And my favorite pair
Just ripped and is no longer, umm, appropriate, for svhool drop off. 🙂

  66. Aryn says:

Thanks for the info and discount. I’ve been meaning to check this out, so you gave me a great reason to shop! I picked up an adorable Lord & Taylor skirt for $9, plus 5 other great things. THANK YOU!

  67. Heather Irene Parker says:

I need to get some more long sleeve t-shirts for not a lot of money. I have a 4-year-old, an almost 2-year-old, and a 5-week-old (who is nursing). All boys. I need functional clothing that can take a beating from dirt, spit-up, and all other boy-related messes.

  68. Amelia says:

I love ThredUp. I was introduced to them by a friend a few years ago. I’m looking for a new pair of suede booties after my dog got ahold of my favorite pair from Old Navy (which they sold out of the same week my dog destroyed mine). Also looking for new cardigans and other teacher-appropriate comfortable layers to replace the worn-out ones in my closet.

  69. Gracie Lehmann says:

Hi again! Ok, weather alert for Virginia, it’s freaking freezing down here. I just got a text from some migrating penguins. 🙂 I went on ThreadUp and found some warm boots, a nice coat, and pants to go under it! How could I resist?
(Ok, they may not be for the fashionista in me, but they look comfortable! And WAY more affordable than Uggs!)
(And this amazing, flattering coat! SO Gorgeous!)
(And these pants! Comfort and Flattering at the same time?!? YES!)

Ok… None of these may match, but they are fun items that would totally go well with this chilly evening! Thanks, Anne!

  70. Lisa S says:

I LOVE ThredUp and spend way too much time browsing the app ??‍♀️ There is a gorgeous purple cross-body Coach purse that I am absolutely drooling over but could get with a free shopping spree… ??

  71. Clara says:

So much to love! Once I started looking it was hard to stop. Love the BCBGMAXAZRIA wool pullover sweater. Thanks for the giveaway opportunity.

  72. Elena says:

Found a B. Makowsky leather handbag that would go so well with everything else in my wardrobe! Well, actually found a few handbags that would go really well with it…but that’s beside the point! Loving ThredUp’s selection of handbags!

  73. Marnie Parmenter says:

I’m a thred up enthusiast and would love to shop for a light winter trench coat…in Texas we get some chilly weather, but a “three-season” coat would give me lots of wear.
