a lifestyle blog for book lovers

It’s feeling like fall here: on the first day of September, Hurricane Harvey finally spiraled its way 1000 miles north, bringing 60 degree temps and 4 inches of rain. So today, reads to usher in the autumn season …

My favorite finds from around the web:

It’s okay to “forget” what you read. “Many of us feel this near-existential fear that we might “lose” what wisdom we extract from the books we read. Such fears are unfounded.”

Reading Jane Eyre while black. “I would be the master of my own mind and imagination; I would repudiate these long-dead white authors who never imagined my black hands holding their works in the first place.”

Why I don’t want to have a minimalist wardrobe. “I love creativity, new inspirations, and the process of change. Wearing new clothes is part of the process…”

15 nonfiction books coming in September 2017 to add to your Fall TBR list. Thrilled to see my book Reading People, out September 19, on this list!

New September Book of the Month selections

This is the most excited I’ve been about new Book of the Month selections in ages! In the photo above, I arranged the September offerings in order, top-to-bottom, of their priority on my TBR list, starting with Little Fires Everywhere, which I read earlier this month on vacation, loved, and enthusiastically recommended on this week’s episode of What Should I Read Next.

I can’t wait to read Sourdough (from the author of Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore) and Sing, Unburied, Sing (I’m seeing this one everywhere). And I initially didn’t think Emma in the Night was for me (her previous novel All Is Not Forgotten was a little intense for my taste) but since I posted this photo yesterday readers with great taste keep telling me to bump it up my list. I’m listening.

I’m a Book of the Month affiliate: that means if you click here to sign up they’ll know I sent you and I get a small commission. Sometimes they send me complimentary books so I can photograph them with twinkle lights (like the ones above). I am a happy paying customer myself and frequent purchaser of gift subscriptions for others.

I would love to hear in comments your thoughts on the selections—especially if you’ve already read some of these titles—and what you’re choosing this month.

  1. I’m joining the chorus telling you to read Emma in the Night! I was not a huge fan of All Is Not Forgotten (and almost didn’t pick up my Emma ARC b/c of that), but Emma was the most satisfying thriller I’ve read since Gone Girl. I’m not saying it’s like Gone Girl…just that I felt equally satisfied upon finishing.
I find many thrillers have endings that either are predictable or so outlandish that they make no sense with the story. My ultimate thriller ending and/or twist is something surprising, but that still makes sense with the story with a little hindsight. Emma did that for you.
I hope you give it a shot and that it works for you!

I loved Sourdough! I’m a huge Robin Sloan fangirl and have read Penumbra at least 6 times. Sourdough is everything I love about Penumbra without falling into the trap of being formulaic. I’ve also heard excellent things and a lot of buzz about Emma. Thrillers usually aren’t my genre so I’m considering this for my MMD Reading Challenge.

  3. Sophie says:

I’m choosing the Celeste Ng book and I have Emma in the Night on hold at the library. I’m interested in Sing, Unburied, Sing but I have to pace out my reading of intense books. Now you have me looking at Sourdough, but perhaps the library for this one.

  4. I’m so excited for Reading People, and for The Four Tendencies by Gretchen Rubin.
I have a whole stack of books I can’t wait to read and then talk about on my blog. I’m trying to read everything with an eye toward how it can help me and other moms have more energy for life. I’m so tired of being tired! And I think understanding personality types is a huge part of the answer.
