This modern classic is among IKEA’s most popular products, makes regular appearances in high-end and low-end design mags, and costs eight bucks.
It’s the IKEA LACK side table, and the odds are that if you don’t have one, your neighbor does.
This little table–which you have to assemble yourself, activating the IKEA effect–is affordable, accessible, and versatile, the perfect blank canvas when it comes to art and design.
Its versatility–and the “hacks” it invites–earns this plain table cult classic status. There are whole websites devoted to clever modifications–some simple, some far-fetched–of IKEA furniture. The LACK’s adaptability makes it especially popular for hacking.
Let’s take a look at a few of my favorite LACK hacks:
I might give this nailhead side table from Clementine & Olive a try. I’m a little obsessed with this look.
This custom ottoman from the ladies at East Coast Creative uses one LACK table and materials from the craft store.
I came up with my own IKEA hack and created this LEGO table for my boys’ room out of the basic LACK table.
This last one isn’t for the LACK, but this shelf-turned-bicycle must be one of the best IKEA hacks ever.
Future cult classic? Maybe.
Tell us about your LACK table–or your favorite IKEA hack–in comments.Â

I totally had one of these and threw it out when we moved. Now I wish I would have kept it and turned it into a lego table for my son who LOVES lego. Maybe I’ll go check if it’s still in the back alley behind my old house.
Mine has a tablecloth over it and a bunch of plants on it in my living room. Table turned garden.
Store-bought food is filled with preservatives and unnecessary additives that can be bad for
your health. It comes with a huge 9 cup work bowl, and is
ideal for combining a great deal of ingredients at once. This is an exciting take
on salsa that uses apples instead of tomatoes and flavors it with the
root of the Mexican jicama vine.
