Favorite finds from around the web:
• How Harper Lee’s long-lost sequel was found. “Lee recalled that when she turned in the manuscript for Go Set a Watchman, her editor asked her rewrite the book from the perspective of Scout as a child. “I was a first-time writer, so I did what I was told.”
• The daily routines of geniuses. “For these geniuses, a routine was more than a luxury — it was essential to their work. As Currey puts it, ‘A solid routine fosters a well-worn groove for one’s mental energies and helps stave off the tyranny of moods.'”
• What’s your book nerd score? “Think you’re a book nerd? Yeah, you’re probably right.”
What I’m reading this week:
• On Audible: Middlemarch. Ten hours in and I might finally be hooked.
• No Ordinary Time: Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt: The Home Front in World War II by Doris Kearns Goodwin.
Do you see my strategic mistake? Reading two 800+ page books at the same time is a bad idea.
Best of the blog:
• What’s saving my life right now. I’ve loved reading all the things that are saving YOUR soul and your sanity this winter.
• Highly anticipated 2015 releases to add to your TBR list.
• Every ten years you have to remake everything. “You break things, you put them back together. That’s how you remake everything.”

I love the routines article… daily walks for the win! … but I’m afraid I could never be a supportive partner to a genius, because there is * no way * I’m going to put toothpaste on an adult toothbrush 😉
Middlemarch is SO GOOD! Read it on my kindle two years ago – I could totally read it again. I’d love to hear the audible recording too, might be fun – is the narrator good??
I think she is. The narrator on my version is Juliet Stevenson and I’m enjoying her performance so far.
I try to start off my Januarys with a Big Book and Middlemarch was my pick this year and it was SO GOOD. I’m so excited to read your thoughts!
Middlemarch and No Ordinary Time are both great reads! I finally read Middlemarch over the summer.
I got a 41 on the quiz.
I liked No Ordinary Time, but whenever I see that book I’m reminded of the terrible sore throat I had when reading it. Isn’t that weird?
Maybe that’s weird, but I recall similar things about my own reading. 🙂
Loved No Ordinary Time. Doris Kearns Goodwin is a remarkable writer/historian.
The Bully Pulpit by her is also good.
I have had Middlemarch on my bookshelf for a couple of years but I have not tackled it yet. I want to do so soon…I just started a 1,000 page fantasy novel that I got from the library so that is my priority for now. It has a wait list so I cannot renew it.
I’m glad to hear that about No Ordinary Time. I’m picking up so many fascinating tidbits … but mostly, it is feeling LONG.
Anne I’d love to hear what your book nerd score was. Mine was a 37. I actually thought it’d be higher but there were a few things that haven’t happened…yet.
Mine was in the 60s! But that’s only because you got a point for every person who sent you the quiz. Otherwise I’d be in the low 40s.
I always love your book recommendations and thought you might like this book.Tattoos on the Heart: The Power of Boundless Compassion by Father Gragory Boyle. A life changer and even better as an audiobook. I read it outloud to my husband on a road trip and cried the entire time.
I keep hearing wonderful things about this book! Thanks for the recommendation.
