Talking to Myself (and a Noonday Collection Giveaway)

Talking to Myself (and a Noonday Collection Giveaway)

Talking to Myself

I’ve become a big believer in dressing for the ordinary days. Experience has shown me that not only do I look nicer when I put a little effort into what I wear, but I feel better, too.

One of my favorite ways to make sure I look pulled together–and not just clothed–in the mornings is to implement the rule of three: three pieces look more complete than just a top and a bottom. So if I’m wearing jeans and a tee, I can turn it into an outfit by adding another key piece like a scarf, cardigan, or belt.

This little rule really works and is easy to implement. Try it, you’ll see.

But then my region suffered through a heat wave last weekend, and I was reminded how the rule of three isn’t quite as easy to pull off when it’s 90 degrees and 110% humidity. It was hot, and all I wanted to wear was shorts and a tshirt. I didn’t care a whole lot about dressing for the day.

But I reminded myself that I feel better when I try a little, and I reached for a statement necklace. Because when it comes to the rule of three, they totally count.

Talking to Myself

Chambray shirt: Stitch Fix // Shorts: Target // La Jolla Necklace: Noonday Collection // Sunnies (old): Banana Republic

On cooler days, or in air conditioning, I still love a pretty cardigan or a flowy scarf. But for ordinary days, a statement necklace is an easy way to look–and feel–put together, without adding heatIt looks pretty, but it also helps me tell myself that today matters, and is worthy of a little bit of effort.

A Noonday Collection Giveaway

Today I’m thrilled to host a giveaway for a $50 gift card to Noonday Collection, so you can clasp on a statement necklace of your own to look a little more put together on hot summer days.

Their jewelry is gorgeous:

Here’s a little bit about Noonday:

“Noonday is every fashionable, world changing girl’s go-to spot for distinct accessories. We use fashion to create economic opportunity for the vulnerable while also giving women here the opportunity to own their own businesses! The company was launched two years ago as a fundraiser to bring home a little Rwandan orphan, named Jack, into his a forever family in Austin, Texas. But the fundraiser quickly grew into a thriving business, and two years later, we have now seen countless men and women rise out of poverty because women are using their purchasing power to create change!”

Noonday sent me the La Jolla necklace to try, and it’s even more gorgeous in person than it is on their website (and very well made).

I’ve been making an effort these past few years to raise my percentage of ethically sourced purchases. (To learn more about the supply chain of most clothing, take a look at Elizabeth Cline’s book Overdressed: The Shockingly High Cost of Cheap Fashion.) As you can see from the Target shorts above, I’m far from perfect with my purchases, but I’m making progress. I love that when I buy from a company like Noonday, I can buy beautiful jewelry and help women in Uganda create sustainable income sources.

To enter the giveaway, just leave a comment. (I’d love to hear what you’d spend your $50 on if you’re the winner.)

I love the inca steps necklace in teal. A lot like the ‘bubble’ necklaces that are so popular now but a little more rustic and less flashy. Definitely more my style

  2. Sarah says:

I would get one of those beautiful necklaces – I actually really like the one you’ve got on in the top photos. I attended a Noonday party recently and ended up buying a purse instead — why? I have too many purses already.

  3. Erin says:

Gorgeous necklace! The rule of three is so true! A necklace or a cardigan makes all the difference.

  4. Amanda W. says:

I usually accessorize with statement earrings, so I’d love to be able to step outside my box and choose a fun necklace! I’m especially drawn to the Inca Steps and Shalom necklaces.

  5. Annette says:

Beautiful. I love the red color that many of their necklaces come in. I need a necklace that color.

  6. Heather says:

I love the inca steps necklace too!! Gorgeous. And I am a big believer in the rule of three… It definitely makes a difference.

  7. The rule of three? I’m trying, really! 🙂 You have inspired me to try a little harder…..especially next year when I’m homeschooling….I won’t have to go pick anyone up so I need to get myself in the habit so I don’t end up wearing my pjs all day (not that there’s anything wrong with that 😉

    • Anne says:

Believe me, I know what you’re talking about. (Actually, I hate staying in pajamas past breakfast. But yoga pants are another story… 🙂 )

  8. Mandie says:

I love the dangling diamonds earrings!!!

You know, I’ve felt so crummy this past month or so with morning sickness, that I have not tried much at all to look nice. ALso, my clothes don’t fit me anymore. It’s started to bother me and I think I shall take your rule of three as a personal challenge, now that I’ve been going out in public more and more lately. 🙂

(I love that necklace with your chambray- looks great!!)

    • Anne says:

If I remember correctly, Hayley Morgan says in The No Brainer Wardrobe that a nice big necklace is a pregnant woman’s best friend. It’s pretty, it’s easy, it’s cheery, and it gives strangers something to complement besides your belly!

Hope you feel better soon. 🙂

  9. Kathy says:

Love the rule of 3, awesome new thought for me. I love all the jewelry you show above but especially love the cubist bracelet.

  10. Allison says:

i went right to the earrings section – love the dazzle earrings, packaged pretty earrings (my fave), threaded garden hoops and zenway earrings. Thx.

  11. MamaTod says:

Getting dressed for the day is sort of like making the bed each morning, it just starts things out right. Besides, if the bed is made, it’s less tempting to climb back into it. ;0

  12. Amy Miller says:

I would probably spend it on a necklace. I didn’t used to wear them, but am finding that I like the way a statement necklace finishes a look. I also like the idea of purchasing products from a company like Noonday. I will take a closer look at their products (when I am not rushing off to work!)

  13. Tina Madole says:

I’m always looking for a wonderful statement necklace. Everything on the website is beautiful!

  14. Jenny says:

I tend to be a bracelet cuff gal, but it would be nice to break out of my comfort zone with a necklace!

  15. Carrie says:

I like necklaces too, mostly because I despise bracelets. The feeling of something hanging off my wrist gives me the heebie-jeebies! The problem is, necklaces aren’t babyproof. I bought a cute leather and turquoise necklace and my husband has had to repair it twice in 2 days from babies grabbing onto it. 🙂

    • Anne says:

Oh, that’s such a good point! I didn’t realize I’d outgrown that stage–or rather, my baby has, and knock on wood!–until you mentioned that.

I think there’s a reason teething necklaces are so popular. 🙂

  16. Cathy says:

I love necklaces! I would probably go for the Funky Paper Bead necklace. And I agree that when you dress better, you feel better about yourself.

  17. Meredith says:

Seriously, I would spend it on anything. I am a jewelry junkie. I agree, a statement necklace or bracelet can make a simple outfit look really put together and take it up a notch. I apply this principle to my work attire. I love the scarf look but in the south in the summer the fabric on my neck makes me sweat – yuck. Love your blog. Your posts are inspirational to me. Thanks for spreading the word about a worthwhile company.

    • Anne says:

I completely agree about the scarf. It’s just too hot and humid here, too. Which is too bad, because scarves are so easy and pretty!

  18. Grace says:

That necklace is beautiful on you! If I won, I would step out of my comfort zone a little and get the Threaded Garden Cuff or Burnt Triangles Bracelet. Also, I’m so thrilled that these are ethical. I rarely every enter giveaways because of that issue. So great to see support for an awesome company.

  19. Christina Rose says:

I really like the La Jolla necklace you’re wearing. I noticed that it’s back ordered…so it must be quite popular! 🙂 I also think the cross shoulder boho bag looks really nice. Thanks for sharing about this great company!

  20. Jenna says:

Anne, I love the rule of 3 idea! Also, the Kampala with Love necklace, Inca Steps necklace (in teal), and the Unpredictable necklace are my favorites. Thanks for introducing me to this company! Love their work…

  21. Dawn says:

I love a good statement piece too, althogh most of what I have is more classic in feel. Time to branch out! Thanks for the giveaway.

  22. Karianna says:

Love the “Rule of Three!” It does make sense though… I’m currently reading “Overdressed” and while it’s informative, I can’t help but feel a wee bit sad… Now that we’ve gone this far with fast/disposable fashion, can we ever go back?

  23. Laura says:

What a great giveaway! I love the jewelry, and I love the reason behind it. I am on the list for Stitch Fix (thanks to you) and I also love the idea of the Rule of Three!

  24. Melinda says:

I love the idea of the rule of three. I feel like I need helping putting together outfits that I like and that look good, but I think the rule of three will be helpful in that regard.

  25. Katie says:

I love a good statement necklace, though I have more statement earrings. And I love the Knotted Nobility version of both.

Though maybe I should branch out into wearing bracelets more, since they’re farther away from grasping baby fingers….

  26. Jennifer H says:

I am so stealing the rule of 3! I have such a hard time with accessorizing. I guess my watch counts because it has a stretchy purple-beaded band and kind of looks like a chunky bracelet, and I wear that every day. But I’d really love to figure out how to wear other jewelry and scarves. Since I love purple (and hey, my watch), I would probably get the violet necklace, but I also really love the chimes necklace and stacked arrow necklace.

  27. Jacey says:

I love the idea of using jewelry to incorporate the rule of three on hot days! I’ll be updating my collection with more necklace options.

  28. Missy G. says:

I was one of the first to answer you on FB! I’ve been eyeing the Bengali Sunset earrings for a while now. I’m more of a statement earrings gal, than necklace. Hope that counts with the rule of 3!

  29. Maureen C says:

I very rarely wear jewelry, but your post is inspiring! I love the simplicity and warm colors of the acai ombre necklace.

  30. Allison says:

I’d have a hard time choosing, everything’s so pretty. But I like the La Jolla necklace that you’re wearing – looks really versatile.

  31. Jamie says:

Oh wow! This is an incredible company! I would love to have the Festival necklace and maybe the beaded statement bracelet.

  32. Katherine says:

I love so many of their earrings! I think I would definitely go for the sapphire orbit earrings first though!

  33. Rachel says:

Love all those necklaces! I would use the $50 for necklaces with a few colors in them so they work with lots of different outfits. I love your rule of three, but I have a very hard time following it. I just feel like I’m not very good with accessories – I try them on with outfits but I’m not confident they look right most of the time. I need help in that department! Can you do another post giving advice on how to pair things together well? I feel like, at heart, I’m still a tomboy and dressing up and feeling nicely put together is a challenge for me. When I can do it well, I definitely feel better about the day.

    • Anne says:

Hi Rachel, let’s just say there’s a reason I’m not a style blogger. But I’ll see what I can come up with. 🙂

  34. DeenaS says:

I would love that beaded headband shown in the picture on your blog. Thanks so much for the chance to win!

  35. Aubry Smith says:

Cute! Never heard of the rule of 3…not a bad idea, I can use a little help in the wardrobe department. 🙂

  36. Tessao says:

I love the idea of the rule of three…I’ve been trying to rid my closet of old t-shirts and stuff and work toward a more adult wardrobe. I’ll have to remember this post!

  37. Jenny says:

I’ve been looking for a bracelet to wear to a wedding this summer. I would love to get the copper twist or splurge on the knotted nobility bracelet.

  38. Tim says:

The last time I was in La Jolla, they said they were missing a necklace. Are you on the lam now?

    Tim

P.S. I have the rule of one. All I need is my black muumuu and I’m ready to go to work!

    • Anne says:

You know, the rule of one is a terrific alternative for women during the warm summer months: just put on a dress and go. But I don’t see it advocated much for men. That’s a shame. 😉

  39. Adrienne says:

i love the inca steps necklace in teal, or the zoe necklace–both make me smile! Thanks for the opportunity to win!

  40. Tracy S. says:

I have been trying to step up my look, and I am not particularly good at accessorizing–or buying accessories, for that matter. I think I would choose the funky paper bead necklace–no, wait, I bought it just a minute ago when I was on their website. Maybe the pelotas bracelet set–nope, bought those, too! I seem to be overcoming my aversion to accessory shopping very nicely!

  41. Brittainy says:

I love noonday! I’m actually having a trunk show in June 🙂 I think I’d pick either the la Jolla or the two coins necklace. I already have the dazzle earring and I love them!

  42. Crystal says:

I’ve been trying to build my collection of statement necklaces. I love the Kampala with Love necklace.

  43. I love the evening horizons necklace, but I would probably get something for my girlfriend, Lesley. She was sooo helpful when I had to be in the hospital with my last pregnancy and even kept our little tribe so hubby and I could go out to dinner! I’ve been looking for something sweet to do for her and she would love these necklaces!

  44. Whitney says:

I love the look of their jewelry – not too incredibly flashy, and it is for a good cause! What a perfect combination. There are so many different styles i am drawn to; I would probably choose a bracelet, though, as I am currently pregnant with my first child, and need to start babyproofing my wardrobe. 🙂 Thanks for the opportunity to win!

  45. Breanne says:

I love the rule of three, and working with a statement necklace in the warmer months. I often throw on a scarf during the winter for warmth and because it makes me feel more pulled together.
I read Overdressed this past winter and was convicted (challenged) to change up some of habits. It’s all a matter of baby steps. Love this company’s pieces and their vision.

  46. Stacey B. says:

The Rule of Three: gah. That explains my day. I’m thinking I look and feel homely, even with nice pieces…I read this post, look down, and count: only 2! No wonder. 🙂

  47. Amanda L says:

I have fallen in love with the dewdrop necklace! Turquoise is my favorite color right now 🙂

  48. Abby Mullins says:

I like the dewdrop, but would consult you before ordering because Sam is sucking my brains dry these days 🙂

  49. Annie says:

Great giveaway! I’m really into statement earrings lately — I’d start with the bone carved leaf earrings!

  50. Deborah says:

What a great company. I had never heard of it. Thanks for bringing it to my attention! I actually liked the headband piece in one of the pictures. My hair has grown out and I am looking for some more fun ways to wear it down.

    • Anne says:

That’s definitely my default. I have to make myself go big with my jewelry. (Sometimes, not always–there’s a reason tiny charms on thin chains are so popular!)

  51. Shan says:

It’s sooo hard to choose but I am in love with the orange, Zoe necklace!
    Thanks for this giveaway.
    blessings,
    The How to Guru

  52. MK says:

I really like the Kampala with Love necklace, although I already have something similar; then again, it’s just about birthday time for a little girl in my house (turning 3!) and she’s so into jewelry, I could see some Noonday bracelets in her future…

  53. Emily C. says:

What a great reminder about the rule of 3.

The Acai Omber necklace is really fun or I also like the Kampala with Love red necklace too. Online window shopping is almost as much fun as making a purchase. Thanks!

  54. Gigi says:

Just subscribed to this blog and already love it.
The rule of 3 is great. And, fun to think about cooler alternatives to scarves. Will check out the noonday website for some statement necklaces.
    Thanks!

  55. Dori says:

Definitely the Inca Steps necklace. Hands-down.

Love the “rule of three” idea. But how does that work for you when there is housework (esp. cleaning) to do and little ones who leave behind their marks on your clothes? Curious for your thoughts on this.

    • Anne says:

I feel like this is the confessional: I usually do any heavy cleaning in workout clothes, or an old tshirt if I’ve got one handy. But I don’t do heavy cleaning very often. I’m very rarely wearing something I wouldn’t feel comfortable running the vacuum in.

As for kids who leave marks on my clothes: I quit buying pieces that needed dry cleaning a long time ago, and that helps a ton. I keep a bottle of Shout handy. And I’ll choose different clothes for heading to the park than I do for running errands with them, or hanging out at home. And if I’m headed to the office it’s fun to not worry about that for a few hours. 🙂

Actually, this is the beauty of the rule of 3. I can be wearing a simple shirt and shorts around the house, but throw on a necklace and suddenly I look dressed. I need that kind of magic in my life. 🙂

  56. Sara says:

    Hello Anne,
I’ve been enjoying your blog. Noonday has some lovley necklaces, I was drawn towards the Inca Steps necklace in coral or teal. Couldn’t decide! It would make such a lovely statement piece. Thanks for your giveaway!

  57. Sondra says:

I might allow my daughters to talk me into going with a bold and colourful necklace! Thanks!

  58. Lydia says:

Thanks for your post! I would love to get a necklace! How great to support such an excellent cause. I hope to be apart of helping woman around the world create sustainable businesses. I’m glad you are helping raise awareness!

  59. Steph Davis says:

I love the bracelets on Noonday and would most likely put the gift card to a couple of those or pick out a statement necklace.

  60. Gigi says:

Does the rule of three still apply if you’re wearing a simple dress? Or is a dress and statement necklace okay?

      • Anne says:

        Tim: heh heh. 🙂

Gigi, with dresses it’s more like the Rule of One! You can add a bold accessory, or not, depending on how much of a “statement” the dress itself makes. Last weekend we went to a wedding, and I wore a shift dress with an ornate collar. I wore (fake) diamond studs, and I might have added a bracelet, but the dress didn’t need anything else. It took me about 2 minutes to dress for the wedding–that was way longer than it took my husband to put on his suit. It was fun to be the speedy one, for once. 🙂

  61. Sarah says:

I have been eyeing their catalog for a while now…..thinking along your lines that I really need to step it up a notch in the dressing category….dressing schlumpy leaves me feeling schlumpy 🙂

  62. Kacy says:

I adore the Inca Steps necklace. Your rule of three is excellent, and I will definitely benefit from using it.

  63. Amy says:

I decided that my summer wardrobe was going to be maxi dresses because pants are the WORST in the summer. Just wearing a dress every day has made me feel more dressed up, and I’m more inspired to wear jewelry too. Now I just need makeup that I won’t sweat off in 10 seconds! 😉

    • Anne says:

Let me know when you find some…I think we all need tips on summer makeup! At least, those of us who live in the unfortunate regions where the humidity is 110% for 4 straight months. 🙂

  64. Esther L. says:

I LOVE your rule of three! I always try to make sure I have earrings in simply because I feel a little more “finished.” I haven’t ventured too much into statement necklaces, but I have eyed quite a few–including the one you have on above!

  65. Andrea says:

I would get the Festival Necklace – it’s so bright and colorful! I’ve also been figuring out looking more put together in the heat and jewelry is such a perfect way to do that.

  66. Abigail says:

I really like that La Jolla necklace. This post is so true-positive perspective can often be the difference between whether a day is good or bad. Thanks for the reminder!

  67. Audrey says:

What a great photo at the beginning of this post!

I would love to win a giftcard to Noonday. They have so many cute pieces!

  68. Amy says:

I would probably get the dipped scarf. Or a gift for my mother-in-law. She’s super into statement jewelry and would love a lot of the stuff at Noonday.

  69. Hillary says:

It would be a hard decision, I’m pretty sure, but I think I would go with this bold and lovely ‘Shalom Necklace’ in yellow!

  70. Crystal says:

The necklace you are wearing is pretty and seems like it’d match many outfits. I also like the Exploration Bracelet. Thanks for featuring this company. They are local to me and I’ve heard the name, but this is the first I’ve heard of their mission.

      • Crystal says:

Yes, in Austin. I’m glad you enjoyed it.
Wearing accessories in Austin during the summer seems toooo HOT! I just want to walk around in workout shorts and t-shirts. 😉 I do totally agree that I should try to look more put together even when it is humid and hot.

  71. Shana Norris says:

The Rule of Three is great, Anne. I’m am terrible about putting on jewelry. Did you use a filter on your photos for this post, to get the “hazy” effect?

    • Anne says:

Nope, the indoor lighting was just terrible. 🙂 I did use a vignette effect to blur (or maybe darken is more accurate?) the edges.

      • Anne says:

Ah, just realized you could have been talking about the outdoor shots. My husband shot those with a 50mm lens; I didn’t do anything fancy to them post-production. I would LOVE to know how to do all that post-production stuff, but it’s not in my skill set. At least not yet. 🙂

  72. Elizabeth says:

I love the rule of three! The past year, I always seem to grab one of my go-to cardigans before I leave home. A statement necklace is a piece I’d like to invest in with the warmer weather going full force and all. Thanks for hosting the giveaway!

  73. Jennifer says:

Thanks for the fashion tip! I’ll be using it today 🙂 As for Noonday, I love the bracelets, especially the Brightly Wound and the Beaded Statement bracelet.

  74. Amanda says:

The more I think about it the more genius I find your rule of three. I would definitely go for a necklace but I got overwhelmed trying to pick a favorite because they have so much cute stuff!

  75. Found your site via the Twitterature link-up on the This Vintage Moment blog. So happy I did!!

The necklace is fantastic and I love the heart of Noonday Collection. I rarely buy jewelry and realized the other day that I truly only do so when I’m in a foreign country (again, rarely :)) or a 10,000 Villages shop. But Noonday is pretty much the same as both :). What a great giveaway.

  76. Nadine says:

I’m totally not trying to sway your vote, but was just thinking how cool the first picture in this post is…and you have nice hair. The necklace they gave you is great, looks like you could put it with lots of pieces…or two. I’m a one piece/dress person with accessories to go. I’d probably get earrings from Noonday, my daughter recently got her ears pierced & wants some hoops.

  77. kelly says:

Long and beautiful earrings to go with the pixie cut I got a few months back. I love sites like this where you get beautiful things are it is all for a great cause.

  78. Suzie says:

Great post and beautiful jewelry! Sometimes it is hard to get past the t-shirt and shorts 🙂
I love all of the necklaces, they are delightfully chunky!

  79. Patricia says:

Gorgeous jewelry and a great cause! I love the La Jolla and the Funky Papar Bead necklaces.

  80. Lesley says:

I’d definitely get a necklace. I need something to draw people’s attention upwards from my massive pregnant belly. Accessories have been a lifesaver as my clothes stretch. 🙂

    • Tim says:

      You could dye your hair.

      Tim
(See Lesley, this is me being helpful. Probably couldn’t tell because it looks an awful lot like me being a pain. The difference is subtle.)

  81. Melissa says:

I love so many of their necklaces and earrings that it would be hard to choose! Thank you so much for sharing! Finding it hard to get past the two items too, but I know it’s worth it!

  82. Caitlin says:

I totally agree that statement necklaces should count towards the 3rd item in the rule of three. I”ve been practicing that rule, and I agree, it really helps!

I would love to get the Unpredictable Necklace if I won the giveaway. Thanks for the opportunity!

    Blessings!
    Caitlin

  83. Erin D. says:

i LOVE noonday! the la jolla necklace is lovely and would go with so much. i’m kind of obsessed with the blue shalom necklace or those coral/neon crocheted earrings — i definitely would not have a problem picking something out! thanks so much for the opportunity!!!

  84. Erin says:

Everything is beautiful — and they have so many choices. I love the Kampala with Love Necklace. The tea towels are beautiful as well!

  85. I love the Zoe necklace you have pictured. I’ve been trying to streamline my wardrobe into color families for each season (which turns out to be much easier said than done); my goal for summer is to have everything based on navy and white with bright, bold accents (think turquoise and coral). It’s still a work in progress, but this jewelry would be a step in the right direction!!

    • Anne says:

I’ve heard that choosing a specific color scheme makes it sooo easy to get dressed in a snap and look really nice to boot, but I haven’t been disciplined enough to try it. Your color families sound beautiful!

  86. Sara says:

Glad to know about Noonday! I’ve also been trying to make more ethical clothing/jewelry purchases lately. My most recent jewelry purchase was a necklace from a Missouri-based business on Etsy. Beads made from locally sourced clay, though no doubt not all of the supplies were made in MO….

  87. Amanda says:

My daughter thinks I should have more big, bright necklaces but I think I’d go with the sparkly bracelet. It would dress up my little black dress for sure!

  88. Jill Talbert says:

My sister purchased a necklace and bracelet from Noonday for me on my birthday and I love them! They’re very well made!

  89. Julie B says:

I like the festival necklace, and the sterling circles necklace – there are so many neat ones! I am a fashion loser, but am going to try implementing the Rule of Three to pick up my game. Thanks!

  90. jessica says:

I would get the same La Jolla necklace you are wearing in that super cute outfit!
I love the way the colors pop and could totally use a statement necklace like that in pulling together some everyday outfits of my own.
Thanks for the chance to win!

  91. jessica says:

I entered the the wrong email address, but i would still love to win the La Jolla necklace!

  92. JJ says:

I really like the blue and red necklace in the top photo. How wonderful for the people of Africa. I agree with another comment that I never enter contests but love that this one is not all about us.

  93. Courtney says:

Whew! Got here just in time. I recently discovered you thanks to your summer reading list (which I love!) and then this Noonday Collection post caught my eye because I (heart) Noonday Collection! I have a couple of their bags, and would love another one. Since you’ve got me thinking about statement necklaces, the Dewdrop and the Olivia would be wonderful. I agree with your rule of three – I always feel better when I’m “dressed” even if I’m only going to the grocery store with kids in tow. Thanks for what you are doing here – I’m enjoying it!
