Pulling out the Christmas books (our literary advent calendar)

Pulling out the Christmas books (our literary advent calendar)

Today we’re putting up the tree, but I’m also pulling out the Advent books–a tradition that’s a whole lot easier than decorating the house.

I haven’t yet decided if we’ll be wrapping them up countdown-style like we did here, or if they’ll all go in a Christmas book basket. After a few years of giving our four kids Christmas-themed books for St. Nicholas Day, we might even have enough books to do both this year.

We’ve added a few books to our collection this year. They are:

Whoo-hoo! I did this for the first time last year. We loved it! Just loved it. You can even read my blog-with-only-one-entry about it. I should post the picture of my wrapped book basket. I basically wrote a post about it to record the details. I am working on my post for this year. We love the Tomie dePaola books for how they record our faith in such a lovely way, not to mention the illustrations. I want to check out The Stars Came Out on Christmas, and I already library loaned the Grinch since my son is really getting into Seuss. I think my book basket might be short some books at first, but hopefully, no one will notice. 😀

A favourite from my childhood and one that is fast becoming my girls’ favourite as well is A New Coat for Anna. The illustrations are nice and the story is touching, without being too cheesy or too sad. =)

Off to check out your other post about Christmas books!

We just finished wrapping our Christmas countdown books last night. Some that were included are How the Grinch Stole Christmas, The Night Before Christmas, The Christmas Rose, and a few Eve Bunting books. We also decorated a little tree with handmade foam book ornaments the kids made. They just cut out book shapes and wrote names of books we’ve read this year, either independently or as a family.

Such great timing! I was going to do a book a day for Advent, but I love the idea of wrapping them.
Christmas with Anne is possibly my favourite Christmas collection, I cannot wait until Miss G is old enough 🙂
I’ll be linking back to this idea next week!!

I tried Black Friday shopping last year. Well, my version of it anyway.

For Advent reading, my wife and I are going through a study on the people of Advent put out by Christianity Today. It’s really interesting so far, focusing first on the genealogy and now on Joseph. Not at all dry, and full of great insights.

Blessed Advent to you and yours, Anne, and everyone else here at MMD,
    Tim

The Sparkle Box-our newest addition to the Christmas repertoire! Teaches about giving and even comes with a Sparkle Box that is to be filled with the things your family does sacrificially this Christmas. Intent is to pull box out on Christmas Day as a birthday gift to Jesus 🙂
