a lifestyle blog for book lovers

On weekends I like to gather my favorite links and favorite photos to share with you. Happy Saturday, all!

My favorite finds from around the web:

How can historical fiction be feminist? A nice piece from the author of Girl in Disguise.

Productivity advice for the weird. I’ve read this three or four times this week. Lately I’ve been regularly sleeping 9 hours a night—60-90 minutes more than usual. When I tweeted that this was awesome, but not great for morning productivity, several of you shared this piece with me, adding the comment: Sleep IS productivity.

5 things to check out at the library (besides books).

10 famous book hoarders. Hoarding never looked so good.

Favorite instagram:

Sometimes I tell stories on Instagram, like this one from our quick trip to Chicago this week. (Follow me on Instagram @annebogel.)

On the podcast:

This week we marked a WSIRN first: our very first mailbag episode. Click here to listen to Ask Anne Anything.

On the blog:

We announced our MMD Book Club fall selections, and I do mean ALL the fall selections. Plus a free class in membership. Read all about it here.

One year ago: 20 of the century’s most banned books.

Two years ago: Ducks and sponges. A personality concept that made its way into Reading People.

Three years ago: I take the long way home. I still do. This post is three years old and I think about it all the time.

Four years ago: Why it’s so hard to put down the book and go to bed already.

Five years ago: The 5 rules that shape every post I write.

Six years ago: Unplanned? More like, unplannable.

Have a great weekend!

Lovely as they are, I feel like the first several book collectors listed, it almost seems a shame. All those books and they look like they are in a museum. My personal collection is probably several hundred (with a huge selection devoted to children because 5 kids and homeschooling), but I only buy books that I absolutely love. To me, if you have so many books you can’t appreciate them all the way they should be. Collections should never be collected just because. There should be meaning, and for some of the libraries shown they seem to be lacking that.

So many free things at the library. Ours has free tutoring for kids in every subject and is open to kids from kindergarten through 12th grade. And zinio magazine app to download free magazines.

The productivity article was very interesting- and yet the snarky voice in the back of my head said if I had a weekly cleaning lady, someone to prep my meals and an assistant I would be SUPER productive too! Just kidding and so not the point, I know. I did really enjoy his perspective.
