“Books find their way to you when you need them.”

Books find their way to you when you need them. | Modern Mrs Darcy

“I think books find their way to you when you need them. Whenever I feel like I’m not going to live to read all the books I want to read, I remind myself that the important ones find their way to me.”

– Rosanne Cash, as quoted in My Ideal Bookshelf

Agree? Disagree? When has an important book found its way to you when you needed it?

Just a reminder: the next Twitterature link-up is on Thursday, August 15. Get ready to share your short, snappy takes on what you’ve been reading lately.

I agree. I often have books I get free and it never seems the right time to read them. Then all of a sudden for some reason, I begin the book and the book is just what I need. Two years ago I had started Randy Alcorn’s 50 Days of Heaven: Reflections that Bring Eternity to Light. A week or so later, I found out my dad’s cancer was terminal. He died before I finished the book but the book helped me process my grief and give me peace about his death. Now I am reading a book by Henry Cloud called Changes that Heal: How to Understand Your past to Ensure a Healthier Future. As I prepare to head back to the states after being gone for 2 years, it is giving me tools to do a better job with relationships I have back in the states.

Nothing brilliant to post on finding books, but I had to take a minute to say that the quote reminds me of Sarah Addison Allen’s book The Sugar Queen. One of the characters legitimately does have books just appear around her when she needs them. When they are there to teach her something she doesn’t want to hear and she tries to ignore them, they just keep popping up again at her elbow, in her car – anywhere. It’s funny and sweet and a gift I totally wish I could sign up for!

  3. This year has certainly been like that for me! A friend gave me “The happiness project” for my birthday without either of us having discussed it, and it was perfect for that time. Then a friend recently just started talking about a book she had in her car that she had picked up on a whim having no idea what it was about, and it was “Grace for the good girl” by Emily freeman, which she leant to me and it spoke to me hugely. Even just yesterday I was thinking about how it felt so bittersweet watching my baby girl get older and less “baby” like, and I thought about the book “Bittersweet” by Shauna Niequist. Then found it was on special for $1.99 in the kindle store. So I think the principle of books finding me is working out pretty well at the moment! 🙂

Yes, indeed they do. I truly believe this. Unexpectedly, my parents-in-law sent me and my husband a book called God’s Favorite Place on Earth this past spring (during a difficult and discouraging season involving waiting on God’s healing and restoration in a certain area of my life). The book is a teaching, as well as a personal narrative on the story of Lazarus from John 11. This book profoundly communicated the heart of the Lord to me and, just recently, the passage John 11 has been popping up EVERYWHERE in my life. A sermon series at church. Referenced in other books. Words that meet me at a very vulnerable place in my journey and bring such refreshment and hope. I have no doubt books are brought to us with that very purpose.

YES! I agree! I have several historical fiction books on my shelf right now but last week a friend handed me one of Dave Ramsey’s foundational books that I have been wanting to read for a while but was too cheap to purchase.
It has come at EXACTLY the right time in our lives for me to rightfully absorb all he has to say.
    Awesomeness

    blessings,

The Happiness Project found me just when I needed it! I was floundering around trying to find a way to make the most out of the wonderful life I had, but Gretchen Rubin really inspired me with practical ideas and well-researched philosophies. Now, when I get tremendous joy out of making a list, I remind myself to “Be Madeline” and just enjoy my quirky habits!

I agree to a certain degree, but I also believe books mean different things to you at different times. Reading the same book can have a different impact.
