Mother-Daughter Stitch Fix (Welcoming My Mom to the Blog!)

my-mama-and-meSince my first post about Stitch Fix, I’ve gotten lots of emails asking: “Is Stitch Fix for older women?”

My first reaction is always, “Older than who?”

I thought older than me would be a good place to start.

And so today, I’m happy to introduce you to: my mom.

My mom recently got her second “fix” about the same time I got my fifth. Our styles aren’t exactly the same, but it was fun to try on our fixes together.

(If you’re thinking, “Wow, I bet strangers stop you on the street and ask if you’re her daughter,” you would be right.)

My mom models the contents of her second fix. In the top left, she’s wearing earrings from her fix and the cutout peasant top from mine. We enjoyed trying on each other’s stuff!

Is Stitch Fix for older women?

My mom didn’t keep anything from her first fix (which is why I didn’t take pictures, even though now I’m kicking myself about it!) She didn’t keep anything from her second fix, either. (She almost kept the earrings: they were lovely, but pricey.) So, both times she’s sent all 5 items back and forfeited her $20 styling fee, which would have been credit towards anything she had kept. (At least the postage-paid envelope they provide makes returns easy.)

But that’s not to say Stitch Fix isn’t for my mom: she’s kept an item from each of my last two fixes! This month the dot cotton chambray blouse (pictured at top) flattered her much more than it did me–and now it’s hanging in her closet. Last month the same was true for a blue sleeveless ruffled blouse.

It works the other way, too–I nearly kept a blouse from her last fix. (Alas, it was dry clean only.) Stitch Fix clearly has clothes that work for my mom–they just haven’t been in her two fixes. (My mom’s biggest complaint has actually been the color palette: she loves bright, clear colors, but the contents of her fixes have been largely muted.)

I don’t know how long it takes most women to get in the groove with Stitch Fix. Some women luck out the first time. I kept one item from fix one and fix two, nothing from my third, and everything from my fourth. I do know that fixes typically get better with time, because they use the feedback you provide after each fix to style your next one.

Before my mom gets another fix, she’ll review her style profile and pin a few more things to her Stitch Fix pinterest board. And we’ll definitely schedule our fixes to arrive at the same time, because that was lots of fun!

Want to try out Stitch Fix? Here’s what to do.

1. Sign up. You’ll typically be put on a waiting list. Expect to wait 4-6 weeks, depending on your size and style preference.

2. Fill out your style profile, answering questions about your lifestyle, body shape, and style preferences. (To get a fix you love, you need to answer truthfully, not aspirationally!)

3. Schedule your fix. Stitch Fix isn’t a subscription service; you schedule a fix whenever you’re ready.

4. Come back and tell me what you think! I’d love to hear all about your experience, especially if you’re not in your twenties or thirties!

How has your style changed as you’ve aged? Do you ever try on clothes with your mom? Tell us about it in comments!

Alas, Stitch Fix is not for XL or Plus size. I’ve been interested since you wrote about your first fix, and just a couple weeks ago, finally clicked your invitation link, only to be disappointed. What I would like to say to your other XL/Plus readers (surely I’m not the only one), is please click the link and attempt to sign up so they see there is interest and I can get a fix! 🙂

Jennifer, that’s such a great point about StitchFix or anything else: tell companies what you want! That greatly increases the odds of your getting it 🙂

They offer plus sizes now! I’ve had some great Fixes so far. If you haven’t checked back in a while, now may be the time to give it another try 🙂

I am a size XL/16 and I got my first fix last month. I kept a cute top, a scarf, and an awesome pair of cropped black pants that fit perfectly, much to my surprise! I had to send back two tops because they were a little tight across the bust, but I made sure to provide detailed feedback so my stylist will know which designers/cuts are a good fit for me. If you’re willing to spend the $20 (in the event that nothing fits), you should try it!

My mom and I have vastly different styles so we’d never be able to trade clothes like that but I love that you and your mom have! That’s so much fun. My mom and I like to go thrift shopping together and can usually find stuff for each other. I’m slowly trying to elevate my mom’s style. She did let me weed out her closet when I was home for Christmas. Progress!

Okay. I’m convinced. I just visited their website and filled out the style profile. 🙂 I’m excited! Also, you and your mom are so cute in your polkadots! The resemblance is uncanny.

  4. LOVE it, Anne! Friend, I so struggle with getting clothes to fit me. I have everything from an XS to a Large in my closet right now! So StitchFix sounds like a good idea if I can get things in multiple sizes! I’ll have to look into it 🙂

  5. Y’all are too cute!! Fun to see more “older” (haha – “older than what?”) women giving it a whirl! Now I need to do this with my mom – try on each other’s things. Great idea!!

Raechel, we would never have tried on each other’s things in the dressing room at an actual store. We wouldn’t even be IN the same store! But it was fun to do it here 🙂

    You are both adorable!

You’re right – it sometimes takes a while to find your groove with Stitch Fix. I liked some things in my first two boxes, but nothing was out of the ordinary. I actually had the same issue as your mom – all the colors were very muted and boring (my last box was all gray, navy, and black). I’m hoping third time will be the charm with me!

    Hi,
I am an “older woman” (50’s) who just can’t make decisions when clothes shopping…so I signed up, and can’t wait to get a Stitch Fix box in the mail. I’ll keep you posted!
Love your blog – it’s my new favorite.

I signed up for Stitch Fix after you first post about it. I received my first Fix a few weeks ago. After trying everything on, I was only so-so about the items. The dress they sent was way to short for this 34 year old mom. I ended up keeping one blouse, after my two teenage daugthers talked me into keeping it. They both wanted to keep the dress and another shirt in my Fix. Apparently it appeals to the much younger girls too! I have received several compliments on the blouse I kept. I should be receiving my next fix at the end of the month. I can’t wait to see what’s inside!

    • Anne says:

Kristen, my 7-year-old repeatedly assures me that she’ll be happy to wear whatever doesn’t work for me in my Fix 🙂 I guess it starts early!

That gray shirt does look good on your mom. I would like to see pictures when she does finally figure it out and loves everything she gets
