I’ve told you about my oldest daughter, the writer, the would-be blogger, and the healthy eater who is literally allergic to junk food. She and I have spent some time together talking about these articles over the past few weeks. I think you’ll enjoy them, too:

From the Wall Street Journal article: “Not writing badly isn’t a snap, but it can be done. Then you can start on the road to writing well.”
I am now setting my goal to not writing badly.
You and me, both
Anne,
We have been away so I am busy catching up on all the blog goodness I missed! I have loved reading about your daughter’s interest in having a blog. I read the post but want to read all the thoughtful comments before I chime in over there… I am though so curious to read anything you have written about your daughter’s allergy to junk food. I am certain that my oldest has a very similar thing going on and would love to compare notes! Would you mind linking to any posts you may have written on the subject? Thanks! Stacey
Stacey, I haven’t really written about it over here. Not yet, at least. What I mean is that in addition to fairly “normal” allergies like milk and wheat, she’s allergic to soy, canola oil, and safflower/sunflower oils, which are in 99% of all processed foods. We’ve had to perfect our label reading skills and I’m continually surprised at just how much of these allergens are in our food supply.
Please tell me what you’d like to know and I’ll email you or throw it in the hopper for a future post
Anne, Interesting… My daughter has no known allergies but her mood after eating ‘junk food’ is noticeably different. I have always tried to explain it to her as if she is ‘allergic’ to these unhealthy foods. I have often suspected food dyes but hadn’t considered things like canola oil… You have given me much food for thought- pardon the pun! I will look forward to more of your writing on this topic!
Thank you for these links. I’ve only just read the junk food article. Very eye opening. I, this past week, spoke to my daughter, who is 15, about blogging. She always has plenty to talk about. Can’t wait to hear of your daughter’s blogging adventure.
The NYT food article is frighteningly eye-opening. I’ve always known generally what the companies’ process is, but to see it laid out like that…
The article was useful in one way: I have a stubborn, “you can’t tell me what to do” streak, and it is now pointed squarely at the food manufacturers.
When I was reading this I thought of your daughter because she mentions her daughter starting a blog.
