What’s In a Name?

Happy Boxing Day!

I used to think this day was about boxing up the Christmas gifts or heading to the stores, but that’s not it at all. Boxing Day is called such for the tradition of giving Christmas boxes of gifts to the servants. To make sense of it, think Downton Abbey, not modern American anything. And if you wish to honor the spirit of Boxing Day, don’t hit the mall–give an unreciprocated gift or act of service.

I’m expecting the interwebs to be pretty quiet today, but on this day after Christmas I wanted to share a post I wrote recently for Jen over at Every Breath I Take about finding joy in the hard places.

From the post:

When my fourth child was born in 2010, we gave him a name that testifies to the joy we’ve found in the hard places.

We just didn’t know it at the time.

Head over to Every Breath I Take to read the rest!

  1. Happy Boxing Day to you too, Anne! (This must be a trend, because I put Boxing Day in the title of my post today as well. I figure I’m in good company anyway!) When I told my son it was Boxing Day today, he asked, “Is that because we box up presents we don’t want and return them to the stores?” Right along with what you posited, isn’t it Anne?

I loved this time of year when I was living in England. Even though that was late 20th c., it all felt very Victorian still. And it was there at this time of year that I became a Christian, soon after New Year’s Day almost 30 years ago. I should write a post about that some day.

    Blessings,
    Tim

    • Great minds :)

Sometime you are going to have to tell me more about living in England. (And yes, you should write a post about that some day.)
