My 7-year-old has decided she might want to be a writer when she grows up, so she’s been practicing. In fact, she’s written a book, and she’s given me permission to share it with you here today.
This little book and its contents are all hers–no prompts from me. It’s very clear to me what inspired some of these pages; I have no idea about some of the others.
I hope you enjoy her book. Now I need to go order her some more Pilot G-2s and her own copy of Emily of New Moon.
What’s a hard truth you learned when you were young?

I love this book! I am looking forward to reading more from this young author! Such good advice for any age group!
This is awesome! Such wisdom from such a young one. And her handwriting is so neat. 🙂
Such wisdom for a young lady! It is amazing the lessons they learn so early! I taught second grade for 8 years and it sounds like she would have been a joy to have in class! Thanks for sharing!
Move over Mrs. Darcy!
Oh. my. heavens.
Tears in my eyes — THIS IS BEAUTIFUL!!!!
What a great Mama you must be to produce such an insightful child. LOVE!!!
Thanks so much, Adriana 🙂
What a smart young lady. You must be proud of her.
I am! Thank you 🙂
I’m very tempted to write in your daughter as my vote for President. This is how we should all live our lives – you are obviously a fabulous mom – be proud!!!
Oh my goodness. I think I need her to guest post for my wisdom series 🙂 That was precious!
Sarah, figuring out these things now is giving you a great start on a great life. Way to go! (And, I didn’t need your mom’s typed captions — I could read your handwriting just fine.) I look forward to reading more of your work sometime.
Love,
Mrs. Biesecker
Lori, Sarah and I read your comment together. She says thank you 🙂
“Out of the mouths of babes.” That was fabulous! I think you definitely have a young authoress in the making. 🙂 I’m looking forward to following her career. I love the simple truths that we all need to be reminded of, and the touch of humor. She also has great handwriting and spelling for someone so young. You should be very proud!
I love this! You have instilled great values into your children.
I think an agent should snap her up quick!
Like mother, like daughter 😉
Out of the mouths of babes! I am always amazed at the wisdom of children (I have one close that that age too). Your daughter writes beautifully. What great spirit, spunk and insight!
Hard truth: that calling someone a “friend” doesn’t mean they’ll always act like one.
How perfectly lovely! So sweet! And my son said just this morning after drawing: “Well, it’s not very beautiful, but I tried. And If I keep trying I will get better.” I wish I could learn that… 🙂
Sarah is the cutest! Next time I visit, we’re going to have to schedule some book writing time. 🙂
She would love that!
Love this, Anne! So sweet. And my goodness, her handwriting is fantastic!
this moved me deeply.
Oh my! She is wise beyond her years. That is the sweetest thing. Looks like she’s going to take after her momma and be a writer, indeed.
I love the things kids think, say and write. Many times I feel like they’re wiser than we are. 🙂 No wonder Jesus tells us to become like little children.
LOVE this! I’m definitely going to share Sarah’s “book” with Libby – she’ll love it! It’s really too bad we don’t live just streets apart anymore…I just know Libby and Sarah would have a blast together – two little bookworms! 🙂 Sarah is truly insightful for her age. You must be so proud!
Oh, they would have a blast together–if only they got the chance to! Maybe one day? Here’s hoping!
I love this. It’s amazing that none of this changes as you get older!!
I know, right?
I wish this were a big poster that I could frame and hang in my office. I could use looking at this every day!
“If you want to sew and don’t have a pattern, don’t use one, be creative”
What an excellent metaphor for life. A wise girl you have here!
So precious! This is a keeper to bring out and show her when she is in her in her adult years.
What a lovely piece of writing. I hope you share more as you can. Wonderful words that some people do not understand their entire lives.
Thanks for sharing Sarah and Anne.
So, so sweet. And perfectly timed. I’m going to show this to my 6-year-old who’s currently learning some hard lessons about friendship. Well done, Sarah!
This is great! What a wise little seven-year-old. =) And you earned major points with me by even knowing what “Emily of New Moon”– my favourite book series– is.
I am so laughing about the if-you-need-money-get-a-job one. A few weeks ago on my blog we went all over the place about that family earning $460/week, and finally one of my male readers noted that the guy needed a different job. Your daughter likewise sums it up pretty succinctly!
This is so sweet and insightful. These are hard truths to learn, but it seems so simple when shared by a child without all of our grown-up issues thrown in there to complicate things.
So lovely, what a clever little girl! This advice should be taken on by both adults and children, you’ve obviously taught her well! X
Fantastic, what a lovely child- she will go along way with that advice!
Amazing advice!! I love the one about a bully coming to your house. And about working from home!! Genius!
Love it! You have an amazing girl. Please tell her how much we randoms appreciate her wise book.
You’ve got one smart kid there, Anne! 🙂 She gives great advice!
Loved this so much! If the rest of America followed this advice we would be in a much better place! Tell her to run for president one day!
I like this kid…. She’s got a good head on her shoulders – good stuff. :o)
Best book ever! Thanks Stumbleupon. lol. Seriously, you need to get some illustrations going with this and publish this bad boy.
My 7-year-old thinks that’s a great idea 🙂
This girl is so very sweet!
I’m looking for a particular link for for Emma. She likes the page about about a friend moving away!
Oh, I’m so glad she does! Hurray for pen pals. 🙂
I love this, still! So precious. Does seem like there is lots of learning going on during playtime.
Adorable!
Goodness, this is the best thing I’ve read all day! Now, I have to go share it to bring a fresh bit of joy and sense to some others! She certainly hit the nail on the head – a very wise young lady 🙂
Thanks so much!
Your daughter’s advice is good for any age. I loved reading her book and was so entranced by the content that I did not notice the typing below her printing.
Just discovered your website today, and fell into this lovely post.
Thank you, Sarah, for the good advice. I especially was touched by the one saying a friend who moves away is still a friend. My best friend just moved away and we are trying to work out how to keep the ties close. It helps that she is my daughter’s mother-in-law.
Love this!!! My kids are 11 and 12 and, although it drives me crazy at times when they think they know everything, I’ve come to discover, that often times, they do now better than adults 🙂 Sharing this!
Fabulous! Such great wisdom from this little one! She’s definitely an author in the making. Let these great values stay with all of us till the end!
I loved this book! It had some truly good advice. Her handwriting is so neat too. 🙂
This is so great! What a smart young girl you have! I definitely see some writing in her future. I have a 6yr old at home, and she often gives me unsolicited advice, so I can relate. 😉 Can’t wait to read more!
Hahaha!
Universal truths placed in cute, simple words by a seven-year-old! Bravo!
Love this! Good life lessons from a 7-yr-old!!
Wonderful! Going to share it with my 8 yr old granddaughter who will definitely enjoy it. Thank you for sharing her excellent words.
Re: A blog of her own!
It is possible to have a private blog with only those people you allow can see it. I have a family blog set up that way. Pictures and information that I want to share with close family are posted on there. I have another that is for my eyes only–an online diary which includes my goals each year on New Year’s Eve.
It might be a good fit and inspire a discussion about who should have access to her work.
Oh my goodness! She is showing wisdom at a young age! I’m always surprised when my 6-year old comes up with stuff like this. It’s like, “Oh, you WERE listening?” 🙂
